He’s suddenly found himself in the public eye after reports surfaced that his wife, Tess, had an affair with a close friend and Brisbane Lions player, Lachie Neale.
The story’s scandalous details have dominated the news and social media, with many football fans openly joking about it. However, Ben Crosley, the husband involved and a director at an investment firm, has consistently refused to comment publicly.
Ever since the news came out last month, Ben hasn’t said anything publicly, even though rumors about his marriage have been spreading.
After a trip to Bali, where he reportedly looked at properties, Ben is now back home in Camp Hill, Brisbane.
I quickly chatted with him on Sunday afternoon when I went to his door to see if his wife was home and had any message.
Ben briefly appeared at the door, stating he wouldn’t be speaking to the media. However, in just six words, he strongly implied that he and Tess were still a couple.
‘She [Tess] does not live here anymore,’ he said.
The last known sighting of the Crosleys at their Camp Hill home was on New Year’s Eve. A photographer saw Tess looking out an upstairs window while her husband opened the door to police officers from Queensland.
Just before 1:30 PM, officers found Ben without a shirt and gave him a large, black, lockable suitcase, along with two other long, black bags.
I happened to glance out the window and saw Ben talking to the police, looking a little closed off with his arms crossed. It was quite a scene! Honestly, it’s hard to say what brought them out – everything seemed calm, and there was absolutely no indication of anything amiss. It was just a curious moment, and I couldn’t help but peek.
Ben declined to discuss his marriage on Sunday, but I have more information about the rumored affair between Tess and Lachie.
I noticed something interesting a few weeks before all the news broke about Lachie and Jules Neale. I was in Brisbane, and there was a buzz about Lachie grabbing coffee – people were definitely talking, and it seemed a little out of the ordinary, even then. It was weeks before Jules publicly shared how deeply hurt she was, but looking back, it definitely felt like a little hint of things to come.
I heard the most interesting thing the other day! Someone saw Lachie – you know, the amazing captain who led our team to two premierships and always seemed like the perfect role model – at a local café. He was with a brunette woman nobody recognized, and his two adorable kids. It was a bit of a surprise, honestly, because he’s always kept his personal life so private.
The café was The Grumpy Monkey Roasters in Norman Park, a spot known to be a favourite of Jules.
The witness first thought the woman with dark hair and striking blue eyes was the family’s babysitter, as she didn’t see any other kids around who might be having a playdate.
But a comment she overheard from the woman set alarm bells ringing.
‘She said, “What happens if somebody photographs us together?”‘ the source said.
‘That’s when I knew something was up.’
At the time, the witness believed Lachie and his wife were likely separated, but hadn’t announced it publicly yet.
It wasn’t until weeks later, when news about Jules’s troubled marriage appeared after a dramatic post on Instagram, that someone realized how everything was connected.
‘I realised [the brunette] was Tess when her photo was suddenly everywhere,’ the local said.
‘That’s when I knew she wasn’t the babysitter – she was the other woman.’
The problems in Lachie and Jules’ marriage started just before Christmas, with news surfacing that the high-profile AFL couple were trying to resolve issues in their relationship.
Jules quickly ended the online discussion, stating, ‘Just to be clear, I’m not dealing with any personal issues right now.’
‘I have been betrayed in the most unimaginable way.’
The post sparked a lot of discussion, and Tess – who used to be a Mormon missionary and is now a married mother – became central to the story when Jules asked her to take down photos of them together from last year’s AFL Grand Final.
‘Take these down, you idiot, you’re embarrassing yourself,’ Jules wrote in a since-deleted comment.
The alleged affair was not, of course, confined to a single coffee outing.
Someone reported seeing Tess and Lachie being affectionate with each other at Total Fusion gym in Newstead, a wealthy area of Brisbane, last week.
Look, I frequent Total Fusion, and honestly, I’ve noticed Lachie getting very close to this woman, Tess, for months now. It’s definitely been a noticeable thing, and I wanted to share that’s what I’ve observed.
‘They did not try to hide it… I assumed he was separated because of it.’
On January 2nd, Lachie publicly announced his divorce at a press conference held at Brighton Homes Arena. He also stepped down from his position as co-captain of the Lions at that time.
‘While I will not go into specifics, I can say that I have let my family down,’ he said.
‘I apologise for my actions, which have hurt those closest to me, and I am deeply sorry.’
He said his main priorities are regaining trust and making sure his children are doing well.
The press conference became awkward when a reporter bluntly asked, “Were you unfaithful to your wife?”
‘I cannot address those rumours,’ Lachie replied.
It came to light last week that the alleged affair had been happening for around three months. Another wife of a player – a ‘WAG’ – discovered it and told Jules about it.
After publicly addressing the situation and resigning as co-captain, Lachie has relocated to a rental property in Brisbane and is currently living by himself.
