Rebecca Crews, Terry Crews’ wife, has shared details about the treatment that helped stop the shaking caused by his Parkinson’s disease.
Recently, a 60-year-old woman received a new treatment called focused ultrasound (FUS). This non-invasive procedure uses sound waves to target areas of the brain and ease her symptoms.
She shared with People magazine that a recent development has allowed her to write again and ended the tremors she was having on her right side.
Rebecca shared that she’s feeling well and has regained the ability to write her name and the date. Importantly, she’s now able to write with her right hand, something she hasn’t been able to do for about three years.
For the last 11 years of her 36-year marriage to 57-year-old Crews, she has been living with a condition that progressively affects the brain.
I’ve always been a bit private about this, but I’m finally sharing because I have some genuinely positive news to share! It feels good to be able to offer something uplifting, and that’s why I decided the time was right.
While speaking with the outlet, Rebecca recalled the moment her husband suggested she try FUS.
She shared that she had been on her knees by her bed, praying and weeping. She hadn’t been able to sleep for days and felt completely overwhelmed.
This ongoing and currently untreatable neurological condition causes muscles to become stiff and movements to slow down. It can also lead to tremors, trouble sleeping, persistent tiredness, and a lower quality of life, potentially resulting in significant disability.
Michael J. Fox was famously diagnosed with it at age 29 in 1991.
Dr. Vivek Buch, a neurosurgeon at Stanford University, described Focused Ultrasound, or FUS, as a promising and innovative technology.
For people with Parkinson’s, regaining the ability to do everyday tasks like eating and dressing can be incredibly empowering. It’s easy to take these simple things for granted until they become difficult.
Let me tell you, dealing with a loved one’s health can be incredibly stressful. In this particular situation, the procedure itself took a full five hours, and unfortunately, the husband had to be away on business during that time. It’s a tough spot to be in, balancing work commitments with family needs, and I really feel for anyone facing that challenge.
Although he wasn’t able to be at the hospital, he remained on the phone with the doctors throughout Rebecca’s MRI scan.
I’ll never forget those nights waiting for news. I was up all night on the phone with the doctors in Australia, getting updates. Finally hearing that everything was okay and she was safe… it was just an incredibly beautiful and relieving moment. I was so grateful.
Rebecca noticed a quick improvement, saying she started to feel the effects of the treatment within hours.
I was at the hotel near the hospital, and while getting dressed, I noticed I could lift my leg without needing to hold onto anything for support. Then, I was amazed to find I could write and sign my name clearly, just as I always had.
I couldn’t do any of those things before [having the procedure],’ she explained.
She will undergo a second procedure for the left side of her body in September.
It’s been tough seeing her so exhausted lately,” Crews admitted. “We’re supporting each other through this, though.
Rebecca first noticed symptoms around 2012, when she started experiencing numbness in her left foot. This eventually led to her developing a limp.
The doctor thought her limp was caused by overexertion, but her trainer observed that she wasn’t moving her left arm as freely as her right while exercising.
The actress, who has five children with the America’s Got Talent host, realized her hand was shaking while putting on lip gloss. She immediately knew it was a tremor, as her grandmother had experienced the same symptom.
