Terrifier 3 rings the slay bells for Art the Clown’s Christmas debut

As a huge horror fan with a soft spot for the gritty and transgressive, I’ve long been intrigued by the sub-genre of holiday horror movies. The way these films blend the cheer and warmth of the holiday season with the raw terror of a slasher is both unsettling and fascinating. And the latest addition to this unique canon is none other than the Terrifier series.

As a gamer, I’ve noticed how filmmakers have been adding an eerie twist to the holiday season by infusing it with horror elements. It all started with Bob Clark’s “Black Christmas” in 1974, which caused quite a stir for merging Christmas cheer with gruesome mayhem. This sub-genre is transgressive, intentionally offensive, and delightfully macabre. Whether it’s the infamous “Silent Night, Deadly Night” from the 1980s or more recent films like “Krampus,” these holiday horror movies never fail to push boundaries.

As a horror movie enthusiast with a soft spot for Christmas traditions, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the latest addition to the holiday horror genre: Terrifier 3. This series has already made a name for itself with its terrifyingly unique antagonist, Art the Clown. And now, they’ve upped the ante by putting him in a Santa suit and having him create a blood angel in a pool of red liquid.

The Terrifier films deliberately have a low-budget, retro feel in their visuals and storytelling reminiscent of ’70s horror films. The initial installment, released in 2018 as “Terrifier,” was a crowdfunded production that gained a significant fanbase through streaming platforms. The second film, “Terrifier 2” from 2022, started with a limited theatrical release but grew in popularity due to word of mouth and the devoted fanbase for its antagonist, Art the Clown, and his grotesque, cheerful portrayal of evil. The upcoming third film seems to be going back to the basics of slasher movies, as suggested by the following simple plot summary from the studio:

On Christmas Eve, as the people of Miles County relax and prepare for slumber, Art the Clown plans to instigate mayhem among them.

Terrifier 3 will hit theaters on Oct. 11.
