Terminator Zero Writer Reveals Why Season 2 Got Canceled

Netflix has officially cancelled “Terminator Zero” after only one season. The show’s creator, Mattson Tomlin, recently explained the reason behind the streaming service’s decision on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Mattson Tomlin on why Terminator Zero was canceled and Season 2 plans

Despite receiving great reviews and positive reactions from viewers, the show didn’t reach a large enough audience, according to Tomlin. He also shared that plans for ‘Terminator Zero’ have been scrapped.

Tomlin explained that while she originally envisioned a ‘Future War’ storyline for seasons two and three, she’s satisfied with how the series ended up as a self-contained story. The animated show, which premiered on Netflix two years ago, continues the story right after the events of the 1991 film, Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

Although critics generally liked the show, not enough people watched it to make the high production costs worthwhile. As Tomlin explained, the show was both costly and took a lot of time to create, so it needed a strong audience to be sustainable, which it didn’t get.

When asked if Netflix hadn’t done enough to promote the show, Janeane Tomlin praised their efforts. She explained that they held premiere events in New York and Los Angeles, conducted a significant press tour for an animated series, and featured the show prominently on the Netflix homepage for over two weeks. She believes Netflix did a good job supporting the series.

Tomlin shared some of his ideas for the show’s future, mentioning he had detailed plans for all five seasons. He’s already completed all the scripts for season two and has outlines for most of season three. He also discussed the possibility of Arnold Schwarzenegger appearing on the show, saying it would only have happened if they could have found a really great way to introduce him – something exciting, not disappointing.
