Terminator: Dark Fate Could’ve Saved the Franchise, But Instead, it Killed It

As a huge sci-fi fan, I always feel a bit sad when I think about the Terminator franchise. It started with two films that were genuinely groundbreaking – they really changed what sci-fi could be and pushed cinema forward. But honestly, the sequels have been pretty uneven, with more misses than hits. That’s why I was so impressed with Terminator: Dark Fate; it actually took a risk and, in my opinion, it mostly paid off. It felt like a fresh take on a series that desperately needed one.

Terminator: Dark Fate doesn’t reinvent the classic storyline of a robot trying to kill the person destined to save humanity, but it does breathe new life into it. The film cleverly acknowledges and respects what came before while also encouraging fans to look forward. Despite never getting a continuation, it’s a sequel that truly deserved a better reception.

Terminator: Dark Fate Borrows Elements of What Worked in the Past

The movie Terminator: Dark Fate begins by showing that Sarah Connor successfully prevented Judgment Day by destroying Skynet. However, another Terminator also managed to succeed – by killing the future threat as a child. This leads to a new, devastating future, not caused by Skynet, but by a different artificial intelligence called Legion.

Okay, so this new Terminator film definitely feels familiar – and that’s not necessarily a bad thing! It essentially revisits the core storyline of the original: a new, incredibly advanced Terminator – they’re calling him Rev-9 – is sent from the future to eliminate a young woman named Dani Ramos. Thankfully, she’s got help in the form of Grace, a super-soldier from the future, and, of course, Sarah Connor. It’s a very similar setup to the first film, and honestly, the filmmakers seem to want it that way. It actually keeps things surprisingly engaging because it’s that core story we love, just with new faces and bigger action.

The story constantly subverts expectations, revealing that the future is always changing and unpredictable. It’s moved beyond simply preventing the rise of Skynet, and in a more technologically complex world, it’s unclear what could even prevent another catastrophe. This allows the narrative to recapture the excitement of the original film, featuring a terminator as determined as the T-800, while proving that fear doesn’t require novelty – classic threats can still be terrifying.

Terminator: Dark Fate Worked by Being Different

What made Terminator: Dark Fate a successful sequel was its fresh approach. Instead of simply retreading old ground or relying too heavily on familiar characters like the Connors, it explored the idea that time isn’t fixed and offered a similar story with a completely new perspective. It didn’t try to copy previous films or undo the events of Judgment Day, which allowed it to feel impactful and original.

The defeat of Skynet shows that the future isn’t fixed, but also that humanity isn’t guaranteed survival, which is why a new threat, Legion, and another Judgment Day have emerged. Despite changes, certain patterns remain – like the continued presence of robotic skeletons, even though Terminators themselves aren’t always present. These new Terminators, though visually similar, are actually more sophisticated, as powerfully demonstrated by Gabriel Luna’s impressive and unsettling performance.

Seeing Grace show up as one of the enhanced humans was so cool! It really showed how people started fighting back after Judgment Day, using tech that was a bit rough around the edges, but definitely more advanced because the future hadn’t happened quite as soon as we thought. What I loved most, though, was that even with this new story, they didn’t forget about Sarah and the T-800, Carl. They weren’t in this movie, but you just know their story still matters and has to connect somehow.

Haunted by her inability to protect John, Sarah Connor finds new meaning in life by becoming a mentor, aided by a T-800 who developed a sense of morality after being cut off from its original mission. Unlike previous sequels, Dark Fate doesn’t simply retread familiar ground; it offers a fresh and satisfying conclusion to their story, while also opening up exciting possibilities for the future without disrespecting the past.

It’s a Shame Terminator: Dark Fate Couldn’t Continue the Franchise

While not a terrible film, Terminator: Dark Fate struggled to regain fan interest after several disappointing entries in the series. Despite this, it was a strong installment and arguably the best chance the franchise had to succeed.

The movie ends with Sarah and Dani driving towards an uncertain future, focusing not on preventing the inevitable, but on preparing for it – a similar approach to the first film. While Sarah Connor once managed to stop a devastating future, she and her new partner might be able to do so again. A sequel could offer a fresh take on Terminator 2: Judgment Day, perhaps by examining what happens when an advanced machine becomes even more sophisticated, or by showing the challenges of stopping an AI like Legion in today’s highly connected world, which isn’t reliant on traditional futuristic technology.

The movie could have delved into several interesting areas, like the mechanics of time travel within its story, the potential for more advanced humans, or even allowing Dani to connect with a protector similar to Grace. More importantly, though, it presents a relevant conflict for today’s world, highlighting the increasing risks and dangers that come with the growing presence of artificial intelligence.

Considering everything, Dark Fate arrived when it was needed most and remains a worthy addition to the Terminator series. These films have always served as a warning, and in today’s world, where actions often seem to have no repercussions, a Terminator movie is particularly relevant. Continuing the story from Dark Fate is the best path forward to truly unlock the franchise’s full potential.
