Tencent Reportedly in Talks to Take Ubisoft Private

As a long-time Ubisoft enthusiast with countless hours spent exploring open worlds and battling enemies in their iconic games, it’s disheartening to see the company facing such turbulent times. From my personal gaming journey, I can attest to the joy and excitement brought by titles like The Lost Crown and Star Wars Outlaws.

It seems that Tencent, a significant Chinese business group, is reportedly discussing strategies for strengthening Ubisoft’s position with their top management.

2021 hasn’t been a stellar year for Ubisoft, with titles such as “Skull and Bones,” “Prince of Persia: The Saga of the Lost Crown,” and “Star Wars: Galactic Outlaws” failing to meet expectations. Despite their quality – I found “The Lost Crown” enjoyable, and Dan seems to have appreciated “Star Wars: Galactic Outlaws.

This year, Ubisoft’s market value has dropped significantly, reducing by more than half. Quite surprising, isn’t it? Interestingly, according to recent reports from Reuters (via Video Games Chronicle), Ubisoft shareholders are currently in talks about a possible takeover of the company.

Tencent currently holds a 10% stake in Ubisoft, but it’s unclear if they will proceed with a full takeover. Reports suggest that Tencent is seeking increased influence in future board matters.

A spokesman for Ubisoft said:

“Our dedication lies in always making choices that benefit everyone involved – our stakeholders. At present, we are also re-evaluating every possible approach for our future strategy.

There’s a possibility that Ubisoft might transition into a privately-held company, and it’s uncertain how this change could affect the games they produce in the future.
