Story Highlights
- Tencent Games is now the sole external shareholder after purchasing HK Hero Entertainment’s 37.07% stake.
- Tencent Games had held 14.33% of the company’s shares last year.
- Despite this, Kuro’s operations will remain independent, following models like Riot Games and Supercell.
As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say I am both intrigued and cautiously optimistic about Tencent Games’ recent acquisition of a majority stake in Kuro Games. Having witnessed the meteoric rise of games like “Punishing: Gray Raven” and “Wuthering Waves,” I can only imagine what new heights these titles could reach with the backing of one of the industry giants.
In a notable move within the gaming sector, Tencent Games has taken over the majority control, approximately 51.4%, in Kuro Games. This shift occurred after Tencent acquired a 37.07% share previously owned by HK Hero Entertainment. Now, Tencent stands as the sole external shareholder of Kuro Games.
Despite this shift, Kuro Games has assured that its operations will remain independent
After this deal, Hero Entertainment no longer owns stocks in Kuro Games. In an internal memo circulating within Kuro Games, it’s been mentioned that Tencent Games has guaranteed Kuro’s independent business strategy will continue as planned and intends to emulate the models of both Riot Games and Supercell.
Since 2018, Hero Entertainment has been backing the creators of games like Punishing: Gray Raven and Wuthering Waves. However, it was only in early 2023 that Tencent Games significantly increased their investment. As of last year, Tencent owned approximately 14.33% of the company’s shares, with HK Hero Entertainment holding about 37.07%, and the Founding Team controlling roughly 48.59%.

Initially in March, there were whispers about Tencent Games acquiring a majority stake in Kuro Games and funding Hero Entertainment. However, the exact share distribution remained the same at that point. But recently, it’s been confirmed that these rumors were indeed accurate.
Kuro Games feels confident that this partnership with Tencent Games will provide a solid foundation for their long-term expansion. To be honest, Tencent Games’ involvement is quite substantial, and given their majority stake in Kuro Games, there’s excitement about the potential for further breakthroughs stemming from the success of Wuthering Waves. As fans, we eagerly anticipate more exciting developments.
