Tell Me Lies season 2 premiere establishes more lies to come (Episode 1 review)

As a die-hard fan of drama series, I must say that the premiere of “Tell Me Lies” season 2 was nothing short of exhilarating! The twists and turns from the first season were just the tip of the iceberg, and I can already feel my heart racing in anticipation for what’s to come.

The long-awaited second season of “Tell Me Lies” has arrived, bringing fresh episodes every week to satisfy our cravings for the Hulu drama. The first season was filled with unexpected plots, turns, and as expected, lies, and I’m guessing that the second won’t deviate from that pattern. Let’s delve into the details of the premiere episode of season 2, titled “You Showed Some Emotion, Didn’t You?” BEWARE OF SPOILERS.

One of the biggest shockers we were left with last season is the fact that Stephen and Lucy’s (former?) best friend Lydia are now together and engaged. The first episode is definitely an establishing one overall as we see what happens next at this party leading up to Evan and Bree’s wedding.

Although Lucy is justifiably upset about their interaction earlier, an interesting turn of events occurs later in the show when Lydia tells Lucy, “I can’t ever forgive you for any of it.” Remarkably, the ex-student from Baird College doesn’t defend herself and appears to feel remorseful instead. Curious indeed

Absolutely, a significant event from the previous season was when Lucy and Evan had a drunken one-night stand, which essentially meant that Evan had been unfaithful to Bree with one of her dearest friends. Not only did this act constitute a breach of trust between them, but Lucy also violated her friendship with Bree. The narrative unfolds during the summer when our group of friends are preparing for their return to school and eventually settling in once they arrive

Once more, we delve into the happenings during the break from school. Stephen, inexplicably, receives an excellent chance, courtesy of Diana and her father. However, it appears that Stephen does not fully deserve this opportunity. Moreover, his girlfriend’s father clearly disapproves of Stephen’s underhanded tactics. I concur. Furthermore, this unscrupulous individual seems to have detected Evan’s dishonesty and inquires about it. Evan admits to it, but fails to mention Lucy as the culprit. Oh, Evan. You ought to have kept quiet about it

In the second season of Tell Me Lies, two fresh characters were immediately introduced. One I found appealing, whereas the other didn’t sit well with me. Thomas Doherty is among the newcomers, playing Leo, who appears to be Lucy’s potential love interest despite her assertion that she wants to concentrate solely on school this year. To be honest, the chemistry between them felt forced and I couldn’t discern any genuine connection between them. Let’s see how their relationship develops in the storyline

Among my favorite moments in season 2 episode 1 was the debut of Tom Ellis’ character, professor Oliver, who is Marianne’s husband. He doesn’t tolerate nonsense or excuses from students and can instantly tell when they’re being dishonest. I’d gladly watch anything starring this Lucifer actor! The chemistry between him and Bree was palpable, as they shared many scenes and conversations

It appears I can foresee the direction this is taking, and it doesn’t look promising. Oh dear. By the way, did you catch Bree’s expression during the episode’s finale flash forward? She didn’t exude pure joy, and there seemed to be something troubling her. And I doubt it was just concern about Pippa and Lucy leaving the party early

In the past, I desperately yearned to slap Stephen across the face when he approached our lunch table and offered Lucy an abysmal apology in front of her friends, including Leo. Honestly, he’s a despicable individual. Initially, Lucy manages to keep her cool, twice even, in this particular episode. However, following the incident at the lunch table, she confronts him, ready to reveal their secrets without hesitation. She no longer cares. And I couldn’t help but cheer for her! After all, the episode is titled “You Got a Reaction, Didn’t You?” – and Stephen certainly elicited one not just from Lucy, but from me as well!

In summary, I believe that the first episode of season 2 of “Tell Me Lies” effectively accomplished its purpose as a premiere. It provided updates on where the characters stand following the events of season 1, both in past and present timelines, progressed the story enough to pique our curiosity about future developments, and introduced new characters seamlessly. The tangled web of deception within this group of friends is likely to expand further, making me eager to witness all the ensuing drama. Rating for the episode: B.

Tell Me Lies season 2 streams new episodes Wednesdays on Hulu.
