Tell Me Lies season 2 episode 7 review: Lucy, don't do what I think you're about to do!

As a seasoned college student who’s survived more than a few late-night study sessions and questionable dorm room parties, let me tell you that this week’s episode of Tell Me Lies had me hooked from start to finish!

The final episode before the second season of “Tell Me Lies” on Hulu concludes next, marking an eventful year filled with drama, although the storyline for the characters seems to have unfolded gradually. In episode 7 of “Tell Me Lies” season 2, titled “I’m Not Drowning Fast Enough,” we witness significant milestones for the group at Baird College. Let’s delve into the review, but beware of potential spoilers ahead!

Tell Me Lies season 2 episode 7 review: Lucy, don't do what I think you're about to do!

To begin, as per our usual routine, we’ll kick things off with Lucy and Stephen. The memory of Lucy’s words from the closing scene of episode 6 seems to be lingering in Stephen’s thoughts, given his dream at the start. This is when Lucy revealed that she was aware of his flaws, yet still held affection for him. So, one might wonder, why is he acting harshly towards her now?

This timing couldn’t have been better, considering how it seems Stephen might share Diana’s perspective about her dad not speaking to her because she didn’t pass the LSATs and even cutting off her finances. I mean, come on! Is her father being any more overly dramatic? It’s not a major issue; she’s just exhausted and under immense stress. Let her rest for a while. Regrettably, Stephen appears to prioritize himself instead of offering the support a boyfriend should. Honestly, the nerve of this man!

By the episode’s end, Lucy is also having a tough day. The charges against Chris have been dismissed, allowing him to escape justice for his actions towards girls at parties. The incident has become a topic of discussion among students at the bar, and Pippa wishes to keep her ordeal private. Feeling frustrated, Lucy impulsively admits that she too was a victim. However, as Diana points out, Lucy’s lie only serves to undermine the truth of women who have genuinely suffered such injustices.

Lucy acted with good intentions, but it turned out to be counterproductive as she had expected. She tended to react swiftly, which might lead to additional complications. It appears that we now understand why Lucy and Lydia have lost touch. Chris is aware of what Lucy said, naturally leading him to inform his sister. This is when Lydia makes it clear that they are no longer friends and should not communicate again. That hurts.

In a moment of revelation, Stephen seems to believe that Lucy might be the more suitable partner for him, given her tolerance of his flaws. Finding her in a state of distress over her friend’s departure, he confesses his lingering affection for Lucy. However, I find it hard to believe this self-centered and inconsiderate man is truly capable of love; he merely pursues what benefits him most. Sadly, Lucy chooses to shut the door instead of dismissing him, leaving me no choice but to exclaim, “NOOOO, don’t close that door!” Despite anticipating this outcome and sensing our path would lead back here, I was still taken aback. It’s disheartening because Lucy had been making such progress throughout the semester.

In another part of the storyline for season 2 of Tell Me Lies, a significant portion was dedicated to exploring the stories of characters like Bree, Oliver, Pippa, and Wrigley. Bree, however, is finding it difficult to keep her feelings in check, leading her to act impulsively. This includes having an encounter with Oliver, who resides with his spouse, while Marianne is nearby. Immediately following this incident, she feels remorseful, but then becomes composed when Oliver expresses his affection for her. Now, Bree is fiercely committed to nurturing this relationship further.

It’s clear you’re trying to convey that he won’t abandon his wife, and you find him rather unpleasant. Regarding Bree’s plan to make Marianne suspicious, it seems incomplete since she didn’t just lose one earring. Instead, she found both, which allowed Oliver to explain them away as a surprise gift or similar. Here are my two points:

Is it customary for professors across various universities to host parties at their homes and invite students, or is this a unique practice at Baird College that might raise some eyebrows? I’m not sure since I commuted to college.

Afterward, it’s clear that Pippa and Wrigley have become close. She reveals to him that she is starting to feel attracted to girls, mentioning one specific individual without disclosing her identity. She then requests Wrigley to maintain this secret. However, their relationship seems a bit peculiar as they end up sharing a night together, but it’s unclear if they officially started dating immediately after this event. Given that Pippa just confessed her feelings for a girl, this sudden physical intimacy with Wrigley appears odd and confusing to me. I believe it might not have been the best timing.

In the bar, as conversations centered around Chris and the doubts cast on the girl who made accusations against him, Lucy added that she too was a victim. This setoff a series of events, culminating in Wrigley revealing Pippa’s personal secret – her preference for women – in front of Diana. This secret, already a sensitive topic for Pippa given the ongoing situation with Chris, was further upsetting as it was carelessly shared publicly.

As a gamer, I felt a sharp sting when Pippa attacked me, exploiting my weaknesses ruthlessly. Ouch! Yet, I couldn’t help but empathize with Wrigley in that moment. He crumbled under the weight of his feelings, confessing about his depression and the emptiness he felt in life. It was a tough scene to watch, and my heart genuinely went out to him.

Wow, that was quite an intriguing episode! The speed wasn’t breakneck, but it sure was jam-packed with events. It seems like every character had a significant moment or shift in Tell Me Lies season 2 episode 7. I believe these developments will pave the way for some exciting conclusions in next week’s finale.

In numerous instances throughout this episode, I found myself wishing I could jolt Lucy and Bree out of their questionable choices! Nevertheless, I must say that overall, the episode was skillfully executed. It successfully introduced tension for the finale, hinted at future developments, and kept the narrative progression on track. Episode rating: B.
