As a therapist who has witnessed countless families go through their fair share of drama and heartache, I can’t help but feel deeply saddened when I see a family like this one. It’s heart-wrenching to see the toxicity that’s been ingrained in their dynamics, especially considering there are children involved who deserve nothing but love and unity among their family members.

During the latest episode of MTV’s Teen Mom: The Next Chapter, Maci Bookout had an open discussion with Ryan Edward’s new partner, Amanda, whom he met while in rehab.

As a lifestyle guide, I myself was once in the spotlight along with Bookout and Edwards on MTV’s 16 and Pregnant back in 2009 when our shared journey led to the birth of their now 15-year-old son Bentley.

Initially featured on the original Teen Mom show, they continued their journey. However, after getting engaged in 2009, their relationship ended in 2010.

Edwards has successfully overcome his severe drug addiction, which was life-threatening in April 2023 and significantly strained his co-parenting relationship with Maci. Following rehab treatment, he is now living a sober life.

Maci explained to viewers in a private conversation that the efforts they both invested over the past year in repairing their co-parenting relationship were key factors that led her to meet with Amanda.

“Maci mentioned that she and Ryan have put in significant effort for quite some time now, aiming to establish a more secure shared parenting arrangement,” according to TooFab’s transcription.

“Both therapy and Al-Anon have boosted my confidence to form fresh connections, so I plan to enjoy a meal out.”

On Thursday, Maci disclosed to her husband Taylor McKinney that she and Amanda attended the same adult high school, marking their first substantial conversation.

Amanda even made a cameo in Maci’s 16 And Pregnant episode back in 2009.

In a similar vein, when I shared this anecdote with Kinney, I mentioned that I had once been in the same class as her, and that our paths crossed again on an episode of ’16 and Pregnant.’ As I got ready to meet up with Amanda and Ryan’s mom Jen, I found myself reminiscing about those shared experiences.

Over the midday meal, Amanda openly discussed her path towards sobriety following her encounters with Ryan in rehab, while Maci made a point of avoiding any judgement regarding Amanda’s previous errors.

Maci first asked Amanda how she ended up in the same adult high school as her over a decade ago.

She shared with Maci that her early years were marked by expulsion from public schools due to drug use, physical altercations, and frequent run-ins with the law.

It took a considerable amount of time for me to grasp things, but I was put through a tough test. I have no intention of returning to that situation again.

Amanda shared that for almost two years, she had maintained sobriety, but unfortunately fell back into old habits following the passing of her parents, which led to her latest stint in rehabilitation. There, she encountered a man named Ryan.

‘Growing up, my mother struggled with drug addiction. Despite this, she wasn’t a poor parent – she was simply young and dealing with her own challenges. Unfortunately, she also introduced me to drugs.’

She revealed that a short while later, her father was diagnosed with advanced stage bone cancer and sadly passed away. This made things extremely difficult for her, but I want to emphasize that this isn’t an explanation for me returning.

She confirmed that she’s currently a year and a half sober — something Maci was happy to hear.

Maci shared with Amanda, “I prefer not to be judged based on my past actions, and this has been particularly important for me over the last few years, especially as Ryan and I work towards improving our co-parenting relationship and fostering a healthier dynamic.”

She added: ‘I can’t holding any of the bulls**t against anybody.’

Amanda admitted to Maci that she was ‘so nervous’ to meet up with her for lunch.

As we go way back to our high school days, I must admit that the moment I saw you again, my heart skipped a beat, and I couldn’t help but feel a flutter of butterflies!

‘I didn’t know how your energy was gonna be, but I was like, “She makes me feel so comfortable.”‘

Maci then revealed why she felt it was the right time for them to talk face-to-face.

“She mentioned that for her, it seemed to be your energy holding you back. It appears as though progress and starting anew might elude you if you solely focus on listening to others instead of taking action.”

During the ongoing conversation, Ryan’s mom, Jen, momentarily interjected to share with Amanda that she hadn’t been overly enthusiastic about her relationship with Ryan, given it started so soon after his overdose incident.

Maci also admitted that she also had her reservations about it.

‘I understand, if it was my son, I would be like, “Hold on.” So I get it,’ Amanda told the pair.

In my personal experience, prior to embarking on our romantic journey with Ryan, we had an important discussion about maintaining our sobriety. This conversation was crucial in setting the foundation for our relationship.

Amanda stated, “We’ve discussed it thoroughly, and we both understand that if either of us experiences a relapse, we must part ways. This is something we’ve mutually agreed upon.”

In another part of the same episode, I found myself shedding tears to a production team member as my sister Brittany and mom, Roxanne, had a heated argument during their therapy session.

In the second season, as events unfolded in an episode entitled “A Toxic Triangle,” I found myself unwittingly ensnared amidst the complex dynamics between my older sister Brittany, aged 32, and our mother Roxanne, who was then seeking treatment for substance abuse issues in a rehabilitation facility.

In the initial stages of this particular episode, I found myself feeling quite hopeful regarding Roxanne’s journey at the substance abuse treatment facility.

On a group phone conversation, she informed other mothers that her mother had been residing at a healthcare facility focused on treatment for roughly three weeks. They were able to communicate just once per week.

Briana stated, “Each time we converse, she seems to improve even more. The responses have all been extremely favorable. I’m relieved to see that she’s committing herself to this treatment center and receiving the necessary care.”

The group call was interrupted by Roxanne calling Briana.

“Roxanne shared some news with you that might seem unbelievable. Here’s the thing, she completed her detox program today.”

Briana was taken aback, and Roxanne confessed that she too was startled, as she believed she still had two more weeks left.

‘Do you feel better?,’ Briana asked.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, let me confess, I’ve been running on empty lately due to my inability to get some quality shut-eye these past few days. But fear not, rest is inevitable for someone like myself who values self-care and balance.

In simpler terms, Roxanne expressed her positive outlook and shared her affection for Briana before wrapping up their discussion.

Briana immediately called Brittany and told her that Roxanne ‘sounds absolutely amazing’.

All of them concurred that it was necessary for Roxanne to return home only after they had all participated in a joint therapy session.

Later on, Briana shared with her friends that her mother’s counselor intended to contact her, as she had sent Briana a message.

Briana explained that her mom isn’t in great health, which she found surprising since she believed things were okay for her. She added that this news was causing her anxiety.

The therapist called and shared that Roxanne was skipping group sessions and not doing anything.

‘Wow. She’s been lying to us for so long,’ Briana said.

Brittany visited Briana’s home for an online counseling session with their mom, aiming to discuss and resolve any issues they were experiencing.

Briana asked her sister if she was ready for the session.

“Brittany expressed that she doesn’t have a favorable opinion of this person because she believes the individual is dishonest. This mistrust stems from the fact that the person seemed to be doing well during their phone conversations with you, but Brittany suspects they were not being truthful.”

Briana said she wanted to ask Roxanne to explain what was really going on.

‘I’m gonna tell her, you bring me no peace,’ Brittany said.

The therapy session was not shown, but Brittany was seen 10 minutes later storming out.

Brittany, as she walked away from the session, asserted, “Your opinions mean nothing to me, Roxanne, for I firmly believe that you’ve always fallen short in your role as a parent. Frankly, it appears you’re more concerned with yourself than your child.”

In the kitchen, Vicky conversed with Brittany, who mentioned that she had shared her feelings with Roxanne earlier.

Brittany expressed her feelings by saying, “They mentioned they were working on breathing exercises for her trauma, and I responded, ‘May I interject? I couldn’t care less about the breathing exercises or her traumatic experiences. If you continue with this nonsense, I don’t want you in my life.’ That pretty much sums up how I feel. The matter is settled,” as she walked away.

Briana emerged 20 minutes later looking dejected.

Briana explained, “My sister had an argument with my mom, and they were both saying hurtful things to each other. It’s like there’s a vicious cycle among us three, and we need to find a way to put a stop to it.”

Briana in a confessional vented her frustration.

She expressed her disappointment since children are involved. It’s just me, two girls, my mother, and my sister in this situation. Ultimately, our shared objective is for everyone to get along and create a harmonious family environment. If we all share the same aim, then why aren’t we collaborating to achieve it? This was her sentiment.

As a mother myself, I can relate to Leah Messer’s recent milestone moment with her twins Aliannah and Aleeah. At 14 years old, it’s natural for them to be experiencing new stages in their lives, such as their first gynecologist appointment. This phase brings a mix of emotions: excitement, nervousness, curiosity, and perhaps even some apprehension. It reminds me of my own experiences with my daughter at that age, and I wish Leah and her girls all the best during this important time in their lives.

‘Your health and wellness is always my priority,’ Leah told the twins.

Leah talked to the twins afterward about their experience.

As a passionate advocate for proper sex education, I can’t help but express my dismay over the inadequate coverage in our schools. Frankly, I believe it’s unjust that some parents neglect to educate their children on such crucial topics.

Leah in a confessional reflected on her experience as a teen mom.

“Perhaps if I’d received sex education in school, I wouldn’t have become a teenager mother. My aspirations were affected by my unexpected pregnancy, as they didn’t come to fruition,” she explained.

Tyler Baltierra went on his first daddy-daughter dance with his daughter Novalee.

Despite himself, he found himself reflecting on their first-born daughter, Carly, who had been adopted by Tyler and his spouse, Catelynn.

He pondered, “What a joy it would have been if I could have taken Carly to a father-daughter dance.” Regrettably, he didn’t have any unique moments with Carly that were all about her individuality. Thus, he intends to create special memories for Nova, Veda, and Rya as they grow up, realizing how quickly time passes by.

Before the dance, Tyler and Novalee dined together, with her assuring him that she hadn’t shared a kiss with any male yet.

They had a blast at the dance and Tyler afterward made an effort to praise her.

Tyler expressed, “You’re truly impressive, young one. Your intelligence shines brightly. You possess a remarkable wisdom, as you often ponder profound matters.”

Nova expressed, “You truly are an outstanding father, and I hold you in high regard. My affection for you is immense. Moreover, whenever I get curious, you never fail to provide answers. Lastly, I am deeply thankful that you took me to the dance.”
