Teen Mom star Kailyn Lowry reveals why she is suffering from ‘mom guilt’ after son Rio’s misdiagnosed lump
Kailyn Lowry feels remorseful as a mother, since a previously misunderstood lump on her son’s stomach could now require surgical intervention.
In the most recent installment of her Coffee Convos podcast, the former Teen Mom star, aged 33, disclosed that she had identified an apparent issue (previously thought to be a small hernia) on her child Rio’s chest, who is now two years old.
Last year, a doctor checked out the lump and said it would heal on its own – but unfortunately, it didn’t go away, instead it became larger and more troublesome.
Rio underwent an ultrasound which determined neoplasia – a tumor – could not be ruled out.
Currently, Lowry, visibly concerned, is actively addressing the problem at hand, leveraging her personal experiences as a cautionary tale to emphasize the significance of prioritizing health above all else.
The mother of seven explained, “I initially believed it resembled a minor inguinal issue near his navel. This assumption came about due to his ISR swim lessons, where he needs to roll over and float on his back. I speculated that the pressure from this activity may have caused a small swelling that appeared hernia-like.
Previously, I accompanied him for a medical check-up, and the doctor said, “It seems to be okay, it should heal naturally, nothing serious. Let’s monitor it.” Sounds good, I didn’t worry about it too much.
‘This year, over the last couple weeks, I’ve noticed this protruding out of his abdomen,’ she said.
She shared a picture of the lump with her fellow host, pointing out that upon closer inspection, it seemed slightly discolored.
I sent a message to Elijah saying, ‘Listen, I need to phone the pediatrician and schedule an appointment since his condition seems to be more severe than it was last year.’
We took our child to the pediatrician, and they said, ‘This isn’t a hernia. I need to get you an ultrasound as soon as possible, or even right away.’
‘Then the ultrasound came back and they’re like, “This is definitely not a hernia,”‘ she added.
Currently, as I share this information with you, I’ve yet to receive any updates on my results. On the chart where I logged in, it indicates a “Reniform nodule in the area of interest, which resembles a lymph node, but could also be a granuloma or complex cyst. However, neoplasia, or tumor growth, cannot be definitively ruled out.” As a mom, hearing that neoplasia can’t be excluded understandably caused a moment of panic – “What on earth does this mean it can’t be excluded?
As stated by the Los Angeles Public Health Department, Neoplasia refers to excessive, unusual cell or tissue growth within the body. This abnormal growth is often known as a neoplasm, or tumor. These growths can be either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous).
Benign tumors tend to expand slowly without causing damage to nearby bodily structures, they don’t penetrate adjacent tissue, and they don’t metastasize or travel to other parts of the body.

Aggressive tumors often expand quickly, infiltrate surrounding tissues, and can migrate, or metastasize (met-uh-STAY-tuh-size), to different areas within the body.
In simple terms, the term “tumor” or “lump” is frequently used to refer to the visible growth or change in a body part that is actually a neoplasm. While people often use the word “cancer” interchangeably with neoplasia, it’s important to note that only malignant neoplasms are correctly called cancers.
The findings prompted Lowry to consult her aunt, a specialist in pathology, who recommended that the entire lump be taken out during a possible biopsy procedure.
In this scenario,
“Later on, I was presented with two choices: clinical follow-up or tissue diagnosis. Given my understanding, I believe the latter is a biopsy, which seems acceptable. To clarify, I reached out to my aunt who’s a pathologist in Pennsylvania. She suggested that if they decide to sedate him for a biopsy, it might be best if they remove the whole thing instead. That’s what we plan to do. Now, I need to contact general surgery to schedule an appointment with them so they can examine it thoroughly.

In essence, let me emphasize this point: When it comes to your wellbeing, always investigate thoroughly, as I myself had assumed a condition for quite some time, only to discover it wasn’t what I initially thought – a hernia.
‘They assured me it would sort itself out on its own, and I didn’t seek a second opinion at the time… However, if you have options for medical examination or treatment, I strongly advise you to get it checked. Now, I’m feeling maternal worry, and also the thought that neoplasia can’t be ruled out is quite unsettling.’
On a Monday, Lowry posted an image on Instagram that showed her son seemingly having an ultrasound examination.
The photo showed Rio sitting on his mother’s lap as the technician processed the procedure. Â
