Teddy Riley says he no longer plans to work with R. Kelly

Teddy Riley clarified on social media late Thursday that he no longer wants to collaborate with R. Kelly, after previously expressing interest in doing so.

Teddy Riley, the influential producer behind the new jack swing sound of the late 80s and early 90s, recently told The Times he’s been in contact with R. Kelly, who is currently serving a 30-year prison sentence for racketeering and sex trafficking. Riley said he’s working to secure funding to release some of the 25 albums Kelly claims to have recorded while incarcerated.

“Everyone deserves another opportunity,” Riley shared with The Times. “People should have the chance to make amends, and God offers forgiveness when you seek it. A lot of people miss hearing [Kelly’s] music, and I believe I’m here to help bring R&B back to the forefront.”

Music

In his new memoir, the Grammy-winning R&B artist reflects on his groundbreaking career and the path he forged in music.

Yet Thursday he appeared to changed course.

I’ve always been driven by the amazing potential of music and working with other creatives – it’s what I love about my job! But I also realize that what we say matters, and I never want my enthusiasm for music to minimize or disrespect the hurt that some people have gone through. It’s important to me that my work doesn’t cause pain.

He said he was truly sorry if anything he said caused pain, explaining that wasn’t his goal. He emphasized that he understands the serious harm caused by abuse and wrongdoing, and that survivors and their families deserve to be treated with compassion and respect, and their experiences should be recognized.

Riley, a veteran music producer who has worked with artists like Michael Jackson, Bobby Brown, and Keith Sweat, said his idea to collaborate with Kelly was just a brief conversation and won’t be happening. He emphasized that appreciating someone’s music doesn’t mean supporting their negative actions, and he wants to make that very clear.

Riley, who recently released his memoir, “Remember the Times,” stated that he’s dedicated his life to creating work built on innovation, honesty, and a passion for his craft. He says he values the recent conversations and is committed to continuing his work responsibly and with clear purpose.

He expressed gratitude on Instagram to all those who continue to support him, his book, and his overall progress.
