Although Ted Lasso seemingly concluded with its third season a couple of years ago, its continued success on Apple TV has led to a fourth season. The show’s third season originally aired in 2023 and was initially presented as the series finale.
While Apple never explicitly called it a series finale, the third season finale of Ted Lasso, titled “So Long, Farewell,” certainly felt like one. It included many references to past episodes, wrapped up the story that started at the beginning of the show, and showed Ted returning to Kansas, suggesting a final ending for the series.
Following the huge success of season 3, discussions about a fourth season of Ted Lasso began quickly. Jason Sudeikis ultimately developed an idea he felt strongly enough about to return. Season 4 is now slated to premiere on Apple TV this summer, driven by strong viewer demand.
Ted Lasso Season 4 Will Bring Back Apple’s Best Comedy
It’s unexpected that Apple is continuing Ted Lasso with a fourth season after initially ending it, but it makes sense. Ted Lasso was crucial in establishing Apple TV as a major streaming service. Just as Stranger Things helped Netflix gain its first wave of subscribers, Ted Lasso is largely responsible for building Apple TV’s audience.
When Ted Lasso debuted in August 2020, the world was still heavily impacted by COVID-19 lockdowns and uncertainty. Its heartwarming story about connection, building relationships, and staying positive resonated with many, making it the perfect show for a difficult year.
The show originated from an NBC Sports advertising campaign. Ted Lasso first appeared as a character promoting their coverage of Premier League soccer, and Jason Sudeikis and Bill Lawrence decided to expand on that concept with a half-hour comedy series. Initially, it seemed like a risky idea that wouldn’t succeed, but the show surprised everyone with its surprisingly emotional and heartfelt story.
At first glance, Ted Lasso seems like a typical comedy about an American football coach who’s completely out of his element when he’s hired to coach a British soccer team. The show gets some laughs from this initial culture clash, but it quickly evolves into something much more meaningful and emotionally resonant.
When we learn about Ted’s divorce, it becomes clear that his cheerful attitude is a mask hiding his struggles with anxiety, insecurity, and depression. As Ted begins to address his own issues, he motivates those around him to do the same. The show beautifully portrays the importance of mental health, especially within the world of professional sports.
Ted Lasso Season 4 Has To Be Great To Justify Undoing Season 3’s Ending
I’m really looking forward to season four of Ted Lasso, but it feels unnecessary, much like Toy Story 4. The third season wrapped things up so nicely and felt like a perfect goodbye to the characters. It seems like this new season is driven more by financial reasons – wanting to capitalize on a successful show – than by a genuine need to continue the story.
I’m hoping to be surprised when the new season comes out this summer. Season 4 of Ted Lasso needs to be exceptional to make up for how season 3 ended, but it’s possible the creators have a fantastic story in store. Since Jason Sudeikis approved it, we can at least expect the characters to stay true to themselves.
