Team Great Britain started off strong with its first two medals at the 2024 Olympics

As a proud supporter of Team Great Britain, I was absolutely thrilled to witness their impressive performances at the Paris 2024 Olympics on the opening weekend. The emotional victory by Harper and Mew Jensen in the women’s synchronized springboard diving competition was an unforgettable moment that left me on the edge of my seat.

Following last Friday’s thrilling Opening Ceremony, over 300 athletes from Team Great Britain are buzzing with anticipation. By the close of Saturday’s competitions, three of these athletes had claimed spots on the medal podiums. This triumphant start sets the tone for numerous exhilarating moments during the Games that lie ahead.

Harper and Mew Jensen plunge to victory

Team Great Britain started off strong with its first two medals at the 2024 Olympics

At the women’s synchronized springboard diving event in Paris 2024, Great Britain secured its first medal with a heartfelt triumph by Harper and Mew Jensen in their final dive. Initially, their scores fell below the required mark during earlier attempts.

In the last competition round, Maddison Keeney and Anabelle Smith from Australia were in third position, only 0.84 points behind the second place. However, during their dive in Round 5, Smith made a mistake which affected their performance. Consequently, their scores dropped significantly with a disappointing 74.40 in Round 4 and a dismal 48.60 in Round 5.

As a gamer, I and my partner, Harper and Mew Jensen, managed to secure a impressive final dive score of 70.68 for a combined total of 302.28 points. This put us comfortably ahead of the Italian diving duo, Elena Bertocchi and Chiara Pellacani, who only scored a total of 294.15 points.

Last year, the duo began collaborating, and they’ve already earned medals at the World Championships. However, Mew Jensen expressed concerns about participating due to a partial back fracture that kept her away from diving for six consecutive weeks. In an interview with The Telegraph,, she shared her challenge:

I didn’t think it was going to be possible. It meant the individual was off the table for me. I did my first line-up for this. You’ve got to push that doubt to the side. The team and Yasmin were completely supportive.

The joyful tears of the female divers as they earned the bronze medal were widely felt, considering that Britain hadn’t claimed a medal in women’s diving since 1960. This triumph marked the first time Britain managed to secure an Olympic medal on the opening day since 2004.

Blood, sweat, and a silver medal

Another way to phrase this could be: Cyclist Anna Henderson secured her second win of the day, claiming the silver medal in the time trial over a distance of 32.4 km. Notably, the 25-year-old athlete managed to stay unscathed at every turn despite the treacherous conditions that led some competitors to crash on the wet track.

Henderson experienced injuries in the form of a broken collarbone from a crash in February this year. Consequently, she was forced out of competition for approximately two months. However, only two weeks after making her comeback, she endured another injury to the same area. Yet, her spirit remained unbroken as she continued to strive for success. According to Tom Davidson’s report in Cycling Weekly.

I was pretty much back on my bike like three days after the surgery…Just the second one [collarbone break] mentally hurt a lot. It really took a lot to get back and get the motivation again. I always had Paris on my mind, and that really carried me through.

I’m thrilled to share that it helped her secure a victory at Nationals and deliver an exceptional showcase in the Tour of Britain.

At the Games, these outstanding athletes were the initial ones to win medals, and we’re excitedly anticipating more medals as the event unfolds in the coming days.
