Taylor Swift says she is ‘blown away’ by Charli XCX and describes her songwriting as ‘inventive’ after her BRAT album sparked feud rumours
As a music enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the vibrant world of pop and electronic music, I can’t help but find myself captivated by this intriguing turn of events. Charli XCX’s latest album, BRAT, has been hailed as the most critically acclaimed record of the year, outshining even the formidable Beyoncé and Taylor Swift. Yet, it seems that Taylor’s strategic maneuvers have once again come into play, with the release of a new limited edition of her album, The Tortured Poets Department (TTPD), to snatch the top spot from Charli on the British charts.
In a recent chat, Taylor Swift commended Charli XCX, contradicting speculations among fans that their relationship as pop artists may have soured due to a recent song.
On the third song of Charli’s latest album BRAT, titled “Sympathy Is a Knife”, the artist expresses feelings of anxiety towards another woman. In the lyrics, she sings, “Even if I really gave it my best, I couldn’t become her.”
As a devoted fan, I find myself resonating with the lyrics that express, “I don’t wish to encounter her in the backstage during my boyfriend’s performance.” My fingers remain crossed subtly, hoping for a swift end to their relationship, which was often present backstage at the 1975 shows, sharing this space with Charli’s future fiancé, George Daniel, who is the band’s drummer.
Despite the fact that the song doesn’t directly criticize anyone, fans have been interpreting it as being about Taylor Swift due to her brief relationship with the lead singer, Matty Healy, at a time when Charli might have penned the lyrics.
In a new feature in New York Magazine, the Cruel Summer hitmaker was asked about Charli and gushed she is ‘blown away’ by her music.
The brave singer-songwriter expressed: “Ever since I first listened to ‘Stay Away’ by Charli in 2011, I have been astonished by her exceptional melodic abilities. Her lyrics are dreamlike and imaginative, constantly surprising me. She manages to steer a song into unanticipated directions, and she has been doing so consistently for more than ten years. It’s inspiring to witness such dedication being rewarded.”
In another part of the conversation, Charli chose not to provide further details regarding the song, but she did mention that it’s about her personally.
She said: ‘People are gonna think what they want to think. That song is about me and my feelings and my anxiety and the way my brain creates narratives and stories in my head when I feel insecure and how I don’t want to be in those situations physically when I feel self-doubt.’
For more than 50 evenings during Taylor Swift’s 2018 Reputation stadium tour, Charlie served as the opening act for the 14-time Grammy Award recipient.
In 2019, when talking to Pitchfork, Charli expressed that performing as an artist felt akin to waving to a crowd of five-year-olds.
She went on to say following the tour she it made her decide to never open for anyone again.
Charli stated, “I’ve accomplished a lot of it, and it significantly solidified my position as the underdog character. Now, it’s time for me to take control and manage my affairs on my own.”
Later on, she defended herself on social media by stating that her remarks were misconstrued. She emphasized firmly, “In the piece and numerous times previously, I’ve expressed my immense gratitude towards Taylor for allowing me to perform as her opening act.”
She’s among the most prominent musicians of her era, and her Reputation world tour ranks as one of the largest concert tours ever held.
Previously this year, Charli asked for the immediate halt of what she called “troubling” chants reportedly heard during her performances, claiming they were about Taylor.
The vocalist reacted on her Instagram Stories following reports that certain fans were voicing harmful comments about another popular singer, Taylor Swift, at her concerts.
She clearly stated that she disapproves of it, emphasizing that it goes against her wishes, and made it clear that she will not accept such behavior.
Following a concert in São Paulo, Brazil in June, several videos surfaced online showing audience members seemingly repeating the phrase ‘A Taylor Morreu’, meaning ‘Taylor has died’ in English.
In a different phrasing, the fan spoke to Charli and expressed: “Hi @charli_xcx, it’s regrettable that some of your Brazilian supporters have acted disrespectfully by shouting ‘Taylor is dead!’ during your shows and events associated with you.”
‘Could you do something about it? We don’t [believe] that’s what music should be about.’
Charli asked people via her Instagram post to cease sharing screenshots of her tweets, whether online or during her live performances.
1. I strongly disagree with this, as it contradicts my desires, and it’s disheartening to imagine such an idea could be accepted here. I won’t stand for it.
For a while now, people have been discussing the possibility of tension between Charli and Taylor, as their recent albums have been competing fiercely on music charts.
Charli’s sixth studio album is receiving exceptional praise, outshining both Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter and Taylor Swift’s recent release, The Tortured Poets Department (TTPD), as the most acclaimed record of the year so far.
1st place on Metacritic, the BRAT series earned an overwhelming approval from 11 different critics with a score of 92 out of 100.
However, unlike expected, the hyperpop-electronic album didn’t reach the top spot on the British charts, as Taylor managed to release a new, limited version of her Time, Time, Time, Deluxe (TTPD) album, complete with additional tracks.
Some fans think that the timing of the Blank Space singer’s release was strategically planned to keep Charli from reaching number one, an approach Taylor has faced accusations of using on previous occasions.
In response to the ongoing debate, The Guardian stated that Taylor Swift’s repeated release of her album ‘Taylor’s Version’ appears to be targeting smaller artists, particularly smaller female artists, which gives the impression that Swift is using her influence like Goliath trying to suppress David’s hedonistic and gothic music.
