Taylor Swift reacquires rights to the music that inspired the ‘(Taylor’s Version)’ campaign
It’s all (Taylor’s Version) now.
On a recent Friday, Taylor Swift shared the news that she has regained ownership of her initial album recordings. This development comes six years following music mogul Scooter Braun’s acquisition of her former record label, which included mastery over Swift’s first six studio albums.
In 2019, Braun acquired Big Machine, a move that was later reportedly sold for $300 million. This transaction inspired Taylor Swift’s hugely successful campaign, “Taylor’s Version,” where the renowned pop artist aged 35 is diligently re-recording each of her albums to replace the original versions in the marketplace.
In her own words, posted on her site last Friday, Taylor Swift expressed that what she’s always yearned for is the chance to work diligently so as to eventually buy her music freely, without any conditions or partnerships, with complete control over it. This statement followed a social media post where she shared a photo of herself surrounded by her early albums.
She went on to express her heartfelt gratitude towards everyone at Shamrock Capital, stating that they were the first ones to present this opportunity to her. Every interaction with them had been transparent, equitable, and considerate. To them, it was merely a business transaction, but for her, it encompassed her memories, sweat, handwriting, and years of dreams. Her gratitude knows no bounds.
As a movie critic, I recently stumbled upon some intriguing news regarding Taylor Swift’s business dealings. Last week, Page Six of the New York Post alleged that Scooter Braun, who has been accused by Swift of bullying and was once associated with her nemesis Kanye West, is attempting to influence Swift’s new contract with Shamrock Capital – a Los Angeles-based investment firm. However, a reliable source close to the negotiation process has denied these claims.
According to the source, full credit for this opportunity belongs exclusively to Shamrock Capital’s partners and Taylor Swift’s management team based in Nashville. Now that Taylor owns all her music, this significant event transpired despite, rather than because of, Scooter Braun’s involvement.
According to the report by The Post, the estimated purchase price for Swift was considered “very inaccurate” by the source, with figures ranging from $600 million to $1 billion.
The pop star also mentioned “Reputation (Taylor’s Version)” in her Friday note.
She mentioned that out of the first six albums, she believed there was no need to rework this particular one as she felt it couldn’t be enhanced in terms of its music, accompanying photos, or videos. Therefore, she had been postponing any attempt at improvement. However, if one is interested, there may come a time when unreleased tracks from that album, known as the Vault, will be released.
Swift stated that she had “fully remade” her self-titled debut album, and “really enjoy the way it sounds now.
The album “Reputation” emerged after a high-profile conflict with Kanye West and his wife Kim Kardashian at that time, which significantly altered Taylor Swift’s longstanding wholesome image as the neighbor girl. In the song “Delicate,” she expressed, “My reputation has never been worse,” to a new love interest, implying that he must like her for who she truly is. This LP saw the artist, who labeled 2014’s “1989” as her debut pop album, experimenting with hip-hop and R&B sounds and textures; the track “End Game” included a rap verse from Future.
Taylor Swift’s album “Reputation” received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album, but it wasn’t recognized in the Album of the Year category despite her previous three nominations. In 2024, Swift made history as the first artist to win four Album of the Year awards when “Midnights” claimed the prize. Interestingly, her latest project, “The Tortured Poets Department,” was up for Album of the Year at this year’s ceremony but was beaten by Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter.
Six months after the conclusion of Taylor Swift’s record-breaking Eras tour, which debuted in March 2023 and spanned 149 shows across five continents, a significant announcement was made on Friday. This tour, believed to be the highest-grossing ever, generated ticket sales approximately $2 billion.
Moreover, if there was any doubt about the significance of the partnership with Shamrock Capital for Swift, she made it crystal clear in her statement.
“My first tattoo,” she wrote, “might just be a huge shamrock in the middle of my forehead.”
