Taylor Sheridan’s The Madison Brings the Very Threat John Dutton Fought to Stop in Yellowstone
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled about Taylor Sheridan’s upcoming series, “The Madison“. This new addition will be linked to the Yellowstone universe, but it promises to bring an element that John Dutton (Kevin Costner) spent five seasons trying to steer clear of. Unfortunately, John met a tragic end when a group of operatives, led by Grant Horton (Matt Gerald), orchestrated his assassination in his sleep at the behest of Market Equities’ Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri). Their aim was to eliminate Governor Dutton who had thwarted their plans for an airport, among other projects, in Paradise Valley.
As a fervent advocate for John’s cause, I can say that his Yellowstone mission was deeply rooted in preserving the valley and the unique way of life that countless generations of the Dutton family had fought and died for. Regrettably, John couldn’t continue his struggle, but his son Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) stepped up to the plate. By selling the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch to Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham), Kayce essentially returned the land to its rightful Indigenous caretakers, fulfilling his father’s mission in a different way.
However, even with Kayce’s victory, Montana will undergo a transformation following John Dutton’s passing. The Clyburn family, much like the characters from The Madison, seem destined to stir up trouble and possibly embody what John spent his last breaths trying to avoid.
The Madison’s Clyburn Family Relocates To Montana From New York
The Clyburn Family Are The Transplants The Duttons Warned About
Moving on, the series titled “The Madison” will trace the journey of the Clyburn family, led by Michelle Pfeiffer portraying Stacy Clyburn, a wealthy matriarch. This is the first spin-off from “Yellowstone,” departing from the Dutton family narrative. Although there are two previous “Yellowstone” spinoffs, they are prequels delving into the Dutton family’s past in 1883 and 1923. Unlike these, “The Madison” presents a glimpse of the clan as they migrate to Montana after the demise of their patriarch, offering a fresh perspective on the Yellowstone universe.
In the fictional world of Yellowstone, it’s quite notable when Stacy and her family move from bustling New York City to Montana, as this is a point of contention for John Dutton, who strongly dislikes outsiders from cities like California and New York City treating Montana as their recreational playground. In the fifth season’s opening episode of Yellowstone, John Dutton halts funding for the Paradise Valley airport project and associated commercial and residential developments, and the governor also threatens to increase taxes on non-residents, essentially saying, “Montana is not your playground.
The Clyburns Might Be The Very Thing John Dutton Fought Against In Yellowstone

It’s common knowledge that Stacy Clyburn, a wealthy individual residing in the biggest city of the United States (New York), has two daughters. One is Paige McIntosh, often seen as a self-absorbed woman who enjoys a lavish lifestyle in New York, which is supported by her investment banker husband, Russell McIntosh. As reported by Deadline, Patrick J. Adams will portray Paige’s spouse. The other daughter, Abigail Reese, is a tenacious and witty New Yorker who has recently divorced and is a mother of two children.
Although we don’t have a lot of information about Stacy’s family at this point, it seems they were the kind of people John Dutton and Beth (played by Kelly Reilly) wanted to keep away from Montana, unless they adapted to its unique lifestyle. In his speech to tourists, John warned that Montana wasn’t a playground, but he also added, “Perhaps if you decide to make Montana your home, you will start treating it with respect.” Those who moved to Montana and accepted the local way of life found a place in John’s heart and his policies. Some members of Stacy’s family might take up the challenge, while others might not.
The Madison’s Clyburn Family Already Feels Like The Opposite Of The Duttons
The Clyburns Will Have A Different Experience Than The Established Duttons
The Clyburn family from The Madison seems quite self-important, and it’s unclear how welcoming Montana might be for tourists and newcomers following Governor John Dutton’s demise. It’s possible that the state’s fresh leadership is open to people like the Clyburns, even promoting tourism to utilize Montana’s offerings as Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) desired. Being city dwellers of New York for most likely their entire lives, The Madison’s family appears to be a stark contrast to the Dutton family, who have resided in Paradise Valley for more than a century.
Although referred to as “The Madison“, this series is portrayed as a deeply emotional exploration of grief and interpersonal relationships within a New York City family in the Madison River valley of central Montana. Similar to Taylor Sheridan’s other works, there will be opportunities for character development and resilience, traits that are evident in the Clyburn family.
The unique aspect of “The Madison” lies in its portrayal of a family of strangers adapting to their new surroundings, with their unfamiliarity serving as a defining characteristic. However, given that heartfelt stories about grief and human connection are also central themes in “Yellowstone“, it’s likely that “The Madison” will align well with the broader narrative of the “Yellowstone” franchise.
