While not officially a sequel to Yellowstone, the new Paramount+ series, Dutton Ranch, definitely feels like a continuation of the story. Taylor Sheridan has created several popular TV shows, and each one – from Lawmen: Bass Reeves to Lioness – has attracted a dedicated following.
While many Western dramas have emerged recently, none have achieved the same level of success as Yellowstone. The show, which premiered in 2018, combines family drama with the classic Western genre. It centers on the Dutton family, who own and operate Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, the largest ranch in Montana. Situated near Yellowstone National Park, the ranch is constantly threatened by those looking to develop the surrounding land.
As the series went on, we learned more about the challenges within the Dutton family, which led to the creation of two prequel shows, 1883 and 1923. Even though Yellowstone ended in late 2024, its first official spin-off, Y: Marshal, premiered on CBS in March 2026. Plus, Taylor Sheridan’s next project, Dutton Ranch, appears to be continuing the Yellowstone story.
The Name “Dutton Ranch” – Isn’t That Another Term For “Yellowstone?”
Although the show isn’t explicitly calling itself that, Dutton Ranch will likely continue the story of Yellowstone as if it were season six. Despite being presented as a spinoff and featuring Rip and Beth moving to Texas, the new show feels like a direct continuation of the Dutton family’s saga.
The new show, “Dutton Ranch,” takes place in Texas, a change from the original “Yellowstone” series which was set in Montana. Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser will return as Beth and Rip, and the first trailer reveals they’ve moved from the 1,000-acre ranch they acquired at the end of “Yellowstone” to a new ranch in Texas.
Even Behind The Camera, This Is Yellowstone Season 6
The new series is named after a Texas ranch, but the story of Rip and Beth continues directly from where it left off in the original show. The people making the new series emphasize how connected it is to Yellowstone.
Christina Alexandra Voros will direct both the first and last episodes of Dutton Ranch. Having previously directed episodes of Yellowstone and 1883, her involvement signals the new show aims to feel connected to the original series – a logical approach considering its characters.
Beth & Rip Were Always Secretly The Main Characters Of Yellowstone
While Kayce and Jamie were important characters on Yellowstone, Beth and Rip truly became the show’s main attraction, particularly as the series went on. As the family drama on the ranch started to feel stale and repetitive, the couple’s unique and compelling love story resonated with viewers, making them fan favorites.
Honestly, Beth and Rip just clicked as characters, and fans totally fell in love with them. Because of that, the show started building more and more of the story around their relationship. By season five, I found myself way more invested in what happened with Beth and Rip than even with John Dutton being the Governor – they really became the heart of the show for me.
Throughout Beth’s complicated relationship with her brother, Jamie, and the shocking death of John, Rip remained a steadfast supporter. While Beth’s final choice to sell the ranch to Rainwater came as a surprise, it felt right because it allowed her to finally resolve her long-standing conflict with Jamie and find freedom.
In the final episode, Rip and Beth’s move to Dillon, Montana, felt like they were now the heart of the Dutton family’s future. With Jamie out of the picture and Luke joining the US Marshals, their new beginning suggested that Rip and Beth would be the ones building the next generation of the Dutton Ranch, wherever they ended up.
Why Is The “Yellowstone” Title Being Dropped? Does It Even Matter?

It might seem odd that the show is now called Dutton Ranch instead of simply advertising itself as Yellowstone season 6. While the main characters have left the Yellowstone ranch, they’re still the same people from the original series, and Dutton Ranch continues the story we’ve been following.
There’s a reason for how things played out. John’s death essentially finished the story of Yellowstone, and when Beth and Rip sold the ranch and moved away, that felt like the true end of the series. Jamie’s death earlier on had already set this up, as it meant both John and Jamie no longer had any right to the land.
The move to Texas in the new show clearly signals a fresh start for the characters, marking the beginning of a new story arc. This essentially means the original story of the Yellowstone ranch has come to a definitive end.
Instead of simply continuing the story of Yellowstone or feeling like a repeat, Dutton Ranch has the potential to be a completely new and engaging series with the characters we already love. A fresh beginning with Dutton Ranch was essential for Beth and Rip after Yellowstone concluded.
