Taylor Sheridan’s New 9-Part Yellowstone Spinoff Didn’t Kill Off Matthew McConaughey’s Sequel Show

Taylor Sheridan’s new Yellowstone spinoff didn’t kill this actor’s sequel series.

Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone has become a huge hit worldwide, consistently topping streaming charts since it first aired. The original series starred Kevin Costner, who played the head of the Dutton family, and followed their struggles to protect their land and maintain their family’s powerful legacy. The show has now expanded into several spin-offs, including 1883, 1923, Dutton Ranch, and Marshals, with more on the way.

Cole Hauser, known for his role in Dutton Ranch, recently spoke with The Playlist about the planned Yellowstone sequel series—often called 2024—which was going to star both him and Matthew McConaughey. While the project was previously untitled, reports surfaced that McConaughey departed due to disagreements over his contract. He will now be working with Hauser on a different series created by Nic Pizzolatto, the mind behind True Detective. Hauser clarified whether issues with Dutton Ranch contributed to the sequel’s cancellation.

Dutton was unique, a project unlike anything else. I understand your point, and I’ve discussed it with Matthew years ago because we were figuring out how to best continue developing these characters – Kelly, myself, and the others – and create something fresh, challenging, and ultimately enjoyable for viewers.

Hauser confirmed that the project with Matthew McConaughey and Nic Pizzolatto is still happening. The new series, titled Arena, will center around two brothers who are coaches at the Division One college level.

The story centers around two brothers who are both college sports coaches. They start out working together, but eventually take head coaching positions at different universities. The plot follows their journey as they compete and ultimately reunite at the National Championship.

Matthew McConaughey’s decision not to participate in the new Yellowstone series is disappointing for fans. He’s no stranger to Westerns, having starred in films like Lone Star and The Rivals of Amziah King, and is a highly talented actor. However, the Yellowstone universe continues to expand with several spin-offs, and the latest, Dutton Ranch, is already receiving positive feedback and proving to be a strong addition to Taylor Sheridan’s world.

The new series Dutton Ranch is receiving better reviews than the Yellowstone sequel Marshals, according to Rotten Tomatoes. After its first two episodes on Paramount+, the series—which follows Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler—has earned an 83% rating.
