I’ve been really enjoying Landman so far – it feels like it’s consistently improving. But to be honest, it needs to really step up its game to reach the level of quality we’ve come to expect from Taylor Sheridan. He’s built this amazing world of shows, mostly Westerns, but he’s starting to branch out and explore different genres as the universe grows, which is exciting.
With Landman, the creator is able to combine his love of traditional Western stories with a more current television style. While Yellowstone updates the Western genre, it still relies heavily on classic Western themes. Landman, however, focuses on stories and characters that feel much more modern.
Billy Bob Thornton plays Tommy Norris, a land negotiator for a major oil company, in this series. While the first season of Landman received a 78% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it didn’t perform as well as creator Taylor Sheridan’s previous shows. However, the second season was better received, and with a third season coming soon, Landman hopes to continue its positive momentum.
Landman Season 2 Was A Worthy Sequel
The first season of Landman stood out because it presented a completely new story within the world Taylor Sheridan has created. With a fresh cast of characters and a new location, the show felt original and engaging. While it’s not flawless, the season delivers enough surprising twists and suspenseful moments to hold your attention.
The second season was better than the first. Critics at Rotten Tomatoes gave it an 83% rating, noting that Taylor Sheridan made improvements to address issues from the initial season. Despite losing a key character in season one, season two of Landman is still a strong continuation of the story.

I’m continually impressed by Billy Bob Thornton – he really is this show. And in season two, he’s just completely become Tommy. There were times last season where the character felt a little over-the-top, but now? He feels so real, flaws and all. Those little awkward lines and mistakes just make him even more believable, honestly.
I’m completely hooked on this show, just like I was with the first season! There’s something about Taylor Sheridan’s storytelling that really pulls you in. While Landman might not have huge surprises, it delivers a solid, satisfying story that makes it totally worth watching all at once. It’s just a really good, well-crafted show.
Why Landman Season 2 Sparked Mixed Reception

While season 2 of Landman was an improvement over the first, it wasn’t perfect. Surprisingly, viewers actually rated season 1 higher. Season 2 still had issues – some were new, and others carried over from the previous season.
A common complaint about shows like Landman and those created by Taylor Sheridan is that the women characters aren’t developed enough. While Season 2 tries to address this, a significant difference in depth between the male and female characters remains. The storylines involving Tommy and the oil industry are certainly entertaining, though.
The show is strong when it focuses on the oilfields or high-stakes decision-making. However, whenever the plot tries to explore Tommy’s personal family life, it loses momentum. There simply isn’t enough depth or interest in that storyline to make it work.
Season 2 of Landman struggles with its dialogue, much like the first season. Attempts at snappy one-liners feel out of place and disrupt the show’s otherwise realistic conversations. This inconsistency can be confusing for viewers, making the experience somewhat unsteady.
What Landman Needs To Fix For Season 3
Landman has potential to be one of the best modern Westerns, but it still needs improvement. Specifically, the show needs to better blend its emotional family story with the harsh realities of the oil business, creating a more unified narrative across the seasons.
The main problem with the first two seasons of Landman is the noticeable difference in quality between the scenes at work and those at home. These two parts of the show don’t feel connected, and season 3 needs to address this. If that means focusing less on the family conflicts, that would be a good solution.
Season 3 of Landman is currently being filmed. While there’s no confirmed release date yet, based on how long previous seasons took to make, it might be available as early as November 2026. If the creator, Taylor Sheridan, can build on the success of season 2, Landman has the potential to be a truly outstanding show.
