Taylor Sheridan Sequel ‘Sicario: Day of the Soldado’ Returns To Free Streaming

A lesser-known film by Taylor Sheridan will be available to stream for free starting in 2026. It’s been seven years since the thrilling, Oscar-nominated film Sicario, directed by Denis Villeneuve, got a sequel. Though critics weren’t as enthusiastic about the second film, audiences continue to enjoy its intense action. Now, fans can look forward to revisiting one of Sheridan’s most hard-hitting movies.

You can now watch Sicario: Day of the Soldado for free on Tubi, starting January 1, 2026. This 2018 action thriller brings back Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin as Alejandro Gillick and Matt Graver. While not a direct sequel to the 2015 film, Day of the Soldado explores a new part of the drug war, focusing on human trafficking at the border between the U.S. and Mexico. When the U.S. government wants to intensify the conflict between drug cartels, Alejandro is sent in to take action, regardless of the consequences. Critics generally liked the film, giving it a 62% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film stars Benicio del Toro (One Battle After Another), Josh Brolin (The Running Man), Isabela Merced (Superman), Jeffrey Donovan (Burn Notice), Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Lincoln Lawyer), Matthew Modine (Stranger Things), Catherine Keener (Get Out), Shea Whigham (Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning), David Castañeda (The Umbrella Academy), Raoul Trujillo (Blue Beetle), and Elijah Rodriguez (The Book of Life). Sicario: Day of the Soldado was directed by Stefano Sollima based on a script from Sheridan. Read the official synopsis:

Sicario: Day of the Soldado starts a new direction for the series. With the drug war intensifying and cartels now smuggling terrorists across the border, federal agent Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) brings in the shadowy Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro) – a man whose family was killed by a cartel leader. Alejandro’s plan involves kidnapping the kingpin’s daughter to worsen the conflict, but as the girl becomes a pawn, both men begin to doubt the purpose of their actions.

Currently, a third Sicario movie hasn’t been officially announced. However, there’s been talk of a sequel for a few years now. Josh Brolin mentioned in an interview earlier this year, while promoting Weapons, that he’d been told the Sicario sequel was definitely happening. While no details were shared, this news suggests the project is moving forward.

I remember reading that Josh Brolin mentioned something about the sequel a couple of years after the producers, Molly Smith and Trent Luckinbill, told Collider they were almost done with the script back in 2023. They were really hoping to get the original cast back together, especially Emily Blunt, who wasn’t in Day of the Soldado. I’m not sure if that’s still happening, but I’d bet Taylor Sheridan is still working on the story, somehow.

Honestly, the recent strike did put us behind schedule a bit, but we’re almost ready to announce dates for the next film. We’re incredibly excited about it! From the start, working with Taylor Sheridan, we’ve always hoped this could be a three-movie story. Our plan is definitely to reunite Benicio Del Toro, Emily Blunt, and Josh Brolin – we have a fantastic story lined up for them, and I can’t wait to see it come to life.
