Taylor Sheridan Praises ‘American Primeval’ in Surprising Revelation by Peter Berg
It can’t be argued that the genre known as Western has seen a resurgence in recent times, largely due to the efforts of Taylor Sheridan. “Yellowstone” was merely the beginning for this productive writer, with spin-offs like “1883” and “1923” further illuminating the genre’s relevance once more. Since then, other filmmakers have emerged to contribute to the discussion, such as Peter Berg, the creator of this year’s Netflix success, “American Primeval”, which even earned a nod from Sheridan himself.
During a conversation with Esquire on diverse topics like his Netflix Western, it was natural for the topic of Sheridan to emerge. Given how challenging it is nowadays to discuss the genre without acknowledging his impact. Although Berg acknowledged that he and the creator of Yellowstone are friends, he didn’t categorize his creation alongside what Sheridan is achieving.
My close companion Taylor and I have collaborated extensively. I hold him in high regard and admiration, and it’s no secret that the Western genre is experiencing a resurgence. However, it never crossed my mind to categorize American Primeval as a conventional Western.
As a movie connoisseur, I found myself drawn to Taylor’s captivating work in the western genre – a realm I had yet to explore. With an itch to infuse my unique perspective and style into this classic genre, I embarked on a new journey with “American Primeval“. This film is set against the backdrop of the Utah War in 1857, shedding light on lesser-discussed historical figures like Brigham Young, portrayed brilliantly by Kim Coates. So, how did my foray into the world of western directing fare? According to the discerning eye of Alex Kurtzman, I passed with flying colors – a testament to the potential this genre holds for fresh voices and visionaries.
When Taylor spotted it promptly and appreciated it, I was thrilled. We had a wonderful conversation about it, and he gave me an approving smile and nod. For any up-and-coming filmmaker, if you can conceive another movie in the same genre, remember, ‘No one has made that specific film yet.’ That’s what we did with American Primeval, and it developed its unique style.
Audiences Loved ‘American Primeval’
Debuting on January 9, 2025, American Primeval immerses viewers in the gritty depths of the Old West to delve into the Mountain Meadow Massacre of 1857, while also scrutinizing themes like survival, displacement, and cultural conflict versus religion. Starring an ensemble cast headed by Taylor Kitsch and Betty Gilpin, this six-episode limited series garnered critical acclaim, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 72%. However, it was the audience who truly embraced the show, as reflected in its Popcornmeter rating of 87%.
In a different phrasing, here’s how it could read: “Timothy L., a Reddit user, shared that while he doesn’t particularly enjoy the Western genre, he found himself completely hooked on this series all the way through. Ron G. added his thoughts by describing it as ‘rapid and gruesome, not suitable for the sensitive.'” Rodney B also offered a glowing review, stating:
This production is simply outstanding! It’s mind-blowing, truly. The photography, plot, superb performances by everyone involved, and the incredible authenticity make you feel as if you’ve stepped into the real Wild West. It’s an epic masterpiece. If you enjoyed the movie ‘The Revenant’, then I’m confident that you will really appreciate or even fall in love with this one.
Undoubtedly, many people have taken a liking to American Primeval, even Sheridan himself, and if this isn’t enough to pique your curiosity about watching it, we’re not sure what will. If you haven’t already seen it, the entire six-episode series by Berg is available for streaming now on Netflix.
