Taylor Armstrong issues groveling apology after backlash over her Bad Bunny Super Bowl show comments

Taylor Armstrong is facing criticism and has had to walk back comments she made about Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime performance after receiving strong public backlash.

Former Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star, 54, sparked outrage on social media Sunday after sharing an Instagram Story that many considered to be a disrespectful jab at a recent performance.

Armstrong digitally placed her face onto Russell Crowe’s character from the movie Gladiator and shared the image with the caption: ‘Were you entertained??’ She also expressed her disappointment with the Super Bowl halftime show, saying she was embarrassed for the NFL and Apple because it was entirely in Spanish and featured a Cuban flag.’

The post immediately sparked anger, as many people criticized the reality star for being culturally insensitive. They were quick to note she had confused the flags of Puerto Rico and Cuba.

As criticism grew, Armstrong faced widespread online mockery, and many people found her statements to be insensitive and hurtful.

By Wednesday evening, she changed her stance, posting a public apology on Instagram. She explained that her original post didn’t accurately represent her true feelings or her respect for the artist and their culture.

She tried to soften her criticism by explaining that while she didn’t enjoy the halftime show’s performance, she recognizes the Super Bowl as an important American tradition. She also emphasized that Bad Bunny is American and that Spanish is a significant part of American culture.

She admitted she was wrong, explaining that she didn’t know enough about Latin American culture and mistakenly thought the flag was Cuban. She promised to learn from the mistake.

I’ve definitely been doing some reflecting lately, and I’m committed to growing from this experience. What I love so much about America is its incredible ability to bring together people from all walks of life. It’s a place where anyone, regardless of their background, can pursue their passions and build a life they love, and that’s a kind of diversity I deeply admire.

I never meant to offend anyone with my words, and I sincerely apologize to those I’ve hurt. I realize now I should have thought more carefully before posting, instead of rushing to share information without checking it first.

Armstrong said he was sorry if his previous comments offended anyone in the Latin community or others. He explained that he’s continually learning and growing, and he’s grateful for the chance to explain his intentions and be more considerate going forward.

Despite the apology, it didn’t stop the backlash, with many users on Reddit and X seeing it as a simple attempt to fix a bad situation.

Some people thought Armstrong’s unexpected regret might have been caused by seeing another Real Housewife deal with backlash after commenting on the same event.

After Armstrong backed down, Jill Zarin, also from Bravo, faced much harsher consequences for how she reacted to the Bad Bunny concert.

A former cast member of The Real Housewives of New York City lost her role on the new E! series, The Golden Life, after sharing a video online where she strongly criticized a recent halftime show, calling it ‘the worst ever.’ The video has since been removed.

Zarin said the show was entirely in Spanish, surprisingly stated there weren’t any white people present, and felt the performance wasn’t suitable for families to view at home.

The reaction to Zarin’s comments was swift and unforgiving.

Zarin claimed she took the video down almost immediately and felt she wasn’t allowed to share her side of the story, but she didn’t offer a complete apology.

Zarin Fabrics, the company Zarin used to own, issued a public statement saying they are no longer connected to her and that they support inclusivity.

Other cast members also reacted, with Dorinda Medley describing the comments as ‘horrifying,’ and most fans agreeing that Zarin was wrong.

Bethenny Frankel became part of the debate after she first shared a video asking if Super Bowl halftime shows should focus on culture or politics.

The former Real Housewives of New York City star initially shared a clip, but then took it down and completely changed her stance. She began to praise Bad Bunny for proudly showcasing his Puerto Rican heritage and singing in Spanish. Many saw this as a blatant change of opinion.

The controversy began with Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime show, which many people loved and are still discussing – it was considered one of the most exciting and memorable performances in recent Super Bowl history.

The Puerto Rican superstar delivered a vibrant and energetic performance, proudly celebrating Latino culture through Spanish songs, Latin-influenced dancing, and imagery representing Puerto Rico and Latin America.

A message briefly appeared on the screen, stating: ‘The only thing stronger than hate is love.’

Multiple Republican lawmakers publicly criticized the show, with some demanding investigations into content they considered inappropriate. These complaints were quickly met with online ridicule.
