Taxiride singer Jason Singh provides big news about the fate of the ’90s rockers after bitter legal fight with former bandmates
As a dedicated fan who has followed Taxiride since their inception in 1997, I can hardly contain my excitement at the news of two versions of this iconic Aussie rock band emerging! The years-long legal battle between Jason Singh and his former bandmates has finally come to an amicable resolution, paving the way for the realization of Jason’s unique vision for Taxiride.
Jason Singh, who was once the lead vocalist of Taxiride, has shared significant updates regarding the potential resurgence of the ’90s Australian rock group, following a challenging legal disagreement with his ex-bandmates.
Over a prolonged legal dispute, he alleged that his bandmates – Dan Hall, Tim Wild, and Tim Watson – failed to disclose the band’s trademark re-registration in 2021 to him.
The singer, 50, has revealed the band will continue, but in two different forms.
On Facebook, Jason shared the news that he successfully resolved his trademark dispute back in February, and that both parties reached a cordial agreement.
He stated that in February, he successfully overcame the opposition to using the name Taxiride as a trademark.
Afterwards, we’ve managed to find a mutually acceptable solution regarding the name: it will be used jointly by both parties, henceforth known as ‘Taxiride’.
Starting today, Taxiride will have two distinct variations: “TAXIRIDE with Jason Singh” and “TAXIRIDE with Tim Watson and Tim Wild,” which may also include Sean McLeod, Andy McIvor, or Ripley Smith.
He added the decision would allow him to realise his vision of the band he co-founded in 1997.
He clarified, “From the beginning, I’ve envisioned Taxiride differently, and I strongly feel it has untapped potential. Now, I finally have the opportunity to act on this intuition.
Taxiride just isn’t the same without the founding members who made it a household name initially,” he pointed out.
‘The sound that you all fell in love with, and it should never be promoted as Taxiride without those people. That’s where the magic was.’
On Thursday, Jason expressed his frustration through a post on Instagram following the announcement that the ARIA-award winning band had planned performances and promotional activities sans him.
‘Back in October 2021, Tim Watson and Tim Wild chose to renew the lapsed Taxiride trademark mark EXCLUSIVELY, as he noted in his statement then.’
I’m taking steps to verify that justice and fairness prevail, with the ultimate goal of restoring the trademark to its rightful owners: Jason Singh, Dan Hall, Tim Wild, and Tim Watson.
‘This challenge, at great expense to me, has been going on for over a year now,’ he added.
Based on research from IP Australia, it appears that the band name “Taxiride” was registered on October 20, 2021. However, an opposition to this registration was made by Singh on March 21, 2022.
Responding to this, Jason’s previous band members published a statement in The Herald Sun, expressing that no individual should dictate the course of the band.
In October 2021, Jason Singh was invited to join Taxiride for a performance. Known for having multiple vocalists, Taxiride’s future should never be dominated by any single member.
We’ve chosen to perform the songs we collectively created, and that’s precisely what we’re currently doing. Historically, our band has undergone several changes in membership without much fanfare.
The present group includes our primary songwriter, two original bandmates, and a rhythm section who’ve been with us for a quarter of a century.
As for the trademark issue, I’m unable to discuss any legal aspects. However, it’s clear that we’re prioritizing what’s best for our overall brand. Wishing Jason success in all his future ventures!
Taxiride achieved the success of two consecutive number one, platinum-certified albums with “Imaginate” and “Garage Mahal.
The band have had nine top 40 singles, including the ARIA award winning Get Set.
