Tawny Newsome’s new Star Trek show sounds like The Office and that could work
As a die-hard Star Trek enthusiast with decades of fandom under my belt, I must say that Tawny Newsome’s new assignment to pen the next Star Trek comedy has me both excited and apprehensive. It’s like being handed the keys to the Enterprise for the very first time – a daunting task, but one I’d gladly take on!
After wrapping up Star Trek: Lower Decks, team members are searching for the next phase in their careers – everyone except Tawny Newsome. Instead, the current and previous voices behind Beckett Mariner have been given a fresh task: penning the next installment of Star Trek humor.
Currently, predicting whether this comedy series will make it to air is quite challenging, as its fate remains uncertain due to the lack of information about its release. At this stage, it’s difficult to say for sure, given Paramount’s past tendencies to cancel shows during development. Therefore, until it actually starts airing, we can only speculate if we’ll be able to enjoy this show.
Newsome generally maintains a positive outlook about her upcoming show, despite some reservations. The concept is innovative and promising, provided it’s nurtured effectively. Given that comedies often struggle to gain popularity among the general public, it becomes even more challenging when the core audience might find the idea somewhat complex or difficult to grasp.
Although this concept initially seems appealing within the franchise, upon further reflection, it appears to stray from some cherished elements. However, given some thought, it seems less like a traditional three-camera sitcom and more reminiscent of “The Office.
As reported by Newsome on TrekMovie.com, the proposed new series introduces a unique twist: the actions and adventures of all participants are transmitted throughout the entire galaxy for everyone to see.
Visitors from the Federation, on a sparkling resort world, discover that their ordinary activities are being televised across the entire quadrant.
This type of idea hasn’t been explored in Star Trek before, and although it might seem overused, it could offer a distinctive, invigorating twist to the show’s comedic approach. Placing these concepts within the context of a series like The Office or Parks and Recreation could open up new avenues for creativity and originality.
The issue with this idea is that it doesn’t consistently produce results. Both Fletch and The Muppets tried to implement the format, but unfortunately, they both fell short. Let’s hope that a fresh attempt can be made and this time, the show will have a broader audience than other failed ideas have managed so far.
