Tawny Newsome on what makes Star Trek work
As a lifelong Trekkie with memories of my parents huddled around our old black-and-white TV set for Star Trek: The Original Series, I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of excitement and nostalgia as I witness the ongoing evolution of this iconic franchise. Tawny Newsome‘s words resonate deeply with me, as she describes Star Trek as “the most buoyant franchise in the world.
As I sit here, fingers dancing on my keyboard, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement. I’m deeply immersed in crafting episodes for Starfleet Academy, and every moment spent on it is pure joy. At a Lower Decks Q&A panel during the ST-NJ Star Trek convention, I shared my feelings, expressing how mind-blowing it is to witness something I wrote being brought to life on such a monumental scale.
Instead of focusing on sets, Newsome, visibly thrilled about her Star Trek journey taking a fresh turn, considers it “the most resilient franchise globally.” In other words, it can weather any storm. This has been evident with the numerous new series that have graced our screens. Now, we’re introducing a young adult series, although not for everyone’s taste, it’s bound to find its own audience and become part of the Star Trek family.
Newsome pointed out that Star Trek’s power lies in its adaptability, as demonstrated by shows like Strange New Worlds. Who would have thought a musical or a fantasy episode could work within it? Moreover, the characters are so richly developed that we eagerly anticipate each weekly episode during their airing.
Despite differing opinions on how Star Trek has evolved, one indisputable fact remains: its undeniable knack for captivating audiences and maintaining its fanbase.
