Tasmanian artist whose work inspired the ABC logo and father of acclaimed Aussie actress Essie Davis dies
As a lifestyle expert with a keen interest in art and culture, I am deeply saddened by the passing of Tasmanian artist George Davis at the age of 94. Having spent a considerable part of his life capturing the beauty of Tasmania’s birdlife, plants, and landscapes through his paintings, he has left an indelible mark on Australian art.
Acclaimed Tasmanian Artist George Davis has died aged 94.
Davis, the father of renowned Australian actress Essie Davis, is recognized for his captivating artwork depicting Tasmanian wildlife, flora, and scenery.
Among his most celebrated pieces is a grand mosaic mural adorning the facade of the old ABC and Tasmanian Music Conservatorium structures in Hobart.
Davis was commissioned in 1961 to create the 19 metre mural after he won a design competition.
The mosaic is made up of 150,000 glass tiles and inspired the ABC logo.
His daughter Essie previously said she thought the mural was ‘a great work of art’.
She shared that she has consistently felt great admiration for her father’s profession. He is not only a skilled artist but also a master at drawing, and his ability to capture both the beauty of nature and the essence of humanity is remarkable, as she expressed during an interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).
It seems reasonable to assume that when you create an exceptional piece of art such as that, you hope it will endure through time, for it is through these lasting works that we preserve our cultural heritage.

Davis was born in Hobart and went on to study in London with a Tasmanian Travelling Scholarship.
He held his art first exhibition in Hobart in 1951.
He was tasked by the Tasmanian Arts Advisory Board to create a collection of sketches and paintings depicting Tasmania’s islands.
In 1980 and again in 1988, Davis’s work was showcased at the University of Tasmania and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery respectively.
