Task season 2 on Sky/HBO – what the S1 ending means for a second season

The crime drama *Task*, featuring Mark Ruffalo as the head of an FBI team, recently concluded after seven gripping episodes. Created and written by Brad Inglesby, who also brought us *Mare of Easttown*, the series centered on Ruffalo’s character, Tom Brandis, and his team as they investigated a series of violent robberies targeting illegal motorcycle gang stash houses.

Although a second season hasn’t been confirmed yet, the show leaves enough questions unanswered, suggesting it could definitely return for another season set in Pennsylvania.

Task season 1 ending explained

Wow, the last episode was intense! It started right after Lizzie – Alison Oliver played her, and she was amazing – was killed in a shootout with those Dark Hearts guys, Jayson and Perry. It was a total shock and really set the stage for everything that happened next.

What to Read Next

Tom figured out that Grasso, the task agent (played by Fabien Frankel), was working with the criminals. He knew the rest of the gang would be looking for the money Robbie (Tom Pelphrey) had stolen from the Dark Hearts before they killed him.

The money also put Robbie’s niece, Maeve (known from the movie *CODA*), at risk. Her father, Billy, had been killed years earlier by Jayson, and she was currently looking after Robbie’s children. This meant Robbie’s kids were in danger too.

After learning Perry had murdered his wife for infidelity with the Dark Hearts gang, Jayson tracked the woman down to her secluded cabin in the woods, not long after killing Perry himself. She had hidden the money there.

Tom and his colleague Aleah went to Maeve’s house, not realizing that Grasso, wounded from a recent shooting and burdened by guilt, was also heading there. Grasso knew that any remaining members of the Dark Hearts gang would try to kill Maeve to steal the money.

Jayson and Maeve were fighting when Grasso shot Jayson, killing him. Tom saw a large bag of cash but ignored it, allowing Maeve to take the money and start over.

Despite the violent end of the biker gang – ensuring Maeve and Robbie’s children would have a secure future, as shown by their fresh start a few months later – Tom still faced problems at home.

He finally had the chance to speak in court about his adopted son, Ethan. Ethan was in prison for killing Tom’s wife, Susan, while experiencing a psychotic break.

During his speech, Tom expressed forgiveness towards his son, suggesting he would welcome Ethan home if he were ever released from his current situation.

Tom made a decision regarding Sam, the young boy Robbie kidnapped during the Dark Hearts case. Tom had been caring for Sam with help from his daughters, Emily and Sara.

He realized he wasn’t able to provide Sam with the stable home life Sam deserved, and that his daughters and Ethan needed his full support. Once Sam found a new family through adoption, the film ended with Tom taking down the posters Sam had decorated his room with and repainting it, suggesting he was preparing the space for Ethan to move back in.

What Task season 2 could feature

Several questions remain unanswered, but could be explored in a potential second season. For example, Grasso is recovering from a gunshot wound, but hasn’t been held accountable for his connection to the Dark Hearts. There’s also more to learn about the extent of his involvement – and his boss’s – with the organization, and whether any other police officers were complicit.

Things are getting really intense in my game! Tom’s oldest daughter, Sara, is going through a divorce, and it’s hitting close to home. In the next-to-last episode, her soon-to-be ex, Andy, is coming to pick up their baby. I’m seriously worried – is he just grabbing the little one for a short visit, or is something more going on?

People don’t seem too concerned, but another season might finally reveal what happens with her baby and if Sara will end up living with her dad and sister, Emily.

Mark Ruffalo has hinted that the show could return for another season with a new case for his character, Tom. He’s even suggested a possible storyline connecting it with the Pennsylvania-based series *Mare of Easttown*.

He explained to *Forbes* that to accurately portray modern life, they need to address complex issues like Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the role of the FBI, and the challenges faced by law enforcement officers in Philadelphia and Delaware County as they strive to protect and serve.

I’m fascinated by the fundamentally good aspects of people. For example, when law enforcement interacts with immigrant communities, are we truly committed to understanding and respecting their experiences? How do we balance upholding the law with showing compassion – that’s what I’m exploring.

So, people have been asking about a crossover with that Kate Winslet show, and honestly, I think it’d be awesome! It would be really interesting to see what happens next for my character – maybe a new romance, and exploring what life looks like as he gets older, like in his sixties. I’m totally up for it, and I’d love to see that story happen.
