Task Is Climbing Back Up HBO Max’s Charts

Several months after it first aired, HBO’s Task is gaining popularity on streaming platforms again. Even though HBO didn’t have all of its biggest shows in 2025, it still launched some excellent new series with strong first seasons. Both I Love LA and The Chair Company were unique comedies that were quickly renewed for a second season, and Task is experiencing the same success on the dramatic side.

The crime thriller Task is becoming increasingly popular on HBO Max, both in the United States and around the world. It initially appeared on the U.S. Top 10 list on January 11th, landing at number 7, and has since climbed into the Top 5. Currently, Task is a Top 10 hit in over 50 countries, including places like Albania, Argentina, Australia, France, Mexico, and Sweden.

Created by Brad Ingelsby, the mind behind HBO’s Mare of Easttown, Task is a seven-episode series starring Mark Ruffalo, a four-time Oscar nominee. The show is set in the working-class neighborhoods around Philadelphia and follows Ruffalo as an FBI agent leading a team to stop a series of dangerous robberies.

The seven-episode drama, starring Tom Pelphrey, Emilia Jones, Fabien Frankel, Thuso Mbedu, Raúl Castillo, Alison Oliver, and Owen Teague, quickly became one of HBO’s most popular new shows. The final episode attracted 30% more viewers than the premiere in September.

Okay, so the show did really well at the end of its first season, which is awesome news – it’s been picked up for season two, and Mark Ruffalo is definitely coming back! There’s even buzz that this show might connect with Mare of Easttown, which is super exciting because they exist in the same universe and are both from the same creator. Kate Winslet even hinted that we might finally get season two of Mare of Easttown filming as early as 2027, which feels like a long wait, but I’m already hyped!

Like the number of people watching it, critics grew to love Task as the first season progressed. The thriller has a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 83 reviews, and viewers give it a 76% score. It’s been recognized as a top show of the year by the AFI and has also received nominations for Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice awards.

Okay, so after that huge finale of ‘Task,’ it’s clear Season Two is going to head in a completely new direction. And honestly, judging by the recent surge in viewers – plus all the buzz it’s been getting – people are definitely eager to see where they take it next. I, for one, am intrigued!
