Tapping into the grey market! Channel Nine to bring The Golden Bachelor series to Australia to help senior citizens looking for love – following Ten’s axing of The Bachelor

Tapping into the grey market! Channel Nine to bring The Golden Bachelor series to Australia to help senior citizens looking for love - following Ten's axing of The Bachelor

As a dedicated follower of reality TV, I have seen it all – from the dramatic twists and turns of The Bachelor to the glamorous guessing games of The Masked Singer. The news that Channel Nine is bringing The Golden Bachelor spinoff to our screens has me both excited and slightly skeptical.

Channel Nine will soon air “The Golden Bachelor,” a new version of the Bachelor series, on Australian televisions, as Network Ten decided to end the popular reality show franchise in May.

According to TV Blackbox, it’s expected that Nine will officially unveil an Australian adaptation of The Bachelorette during their annual Upfronts gathering in October.

The initial show that was aired on ABC in the U.S. featured Gerry Turner, a 72-year-old former restaurant owner who is now a widower, as its main star.

Gerry decided to pop the question to 70-year-old Theresa Nist, and their wedding was broadcasted live as a special event on television.

Despite the fanfare, the couple divorced three months later.

The show was incredibly successful on ABC, as the final episode was viewed by 6.1 million American households, marking the highest viewership for the franchise in the past three years.

The very first episode broke viewing records for ABC, according to Deadline, becoming the most-watched series premiere within the franchise on Hulu, and also setting a new record as ABC’s highest-rated series premiere ever on their streaming platform when including viewings up to 3 days after initial broadcast.

Additionally, the report mentioned that the powerful influence of The Golden Bachelor has led to another expansion as ABC unveiled plans for The Golden Bachelorette.

When Daily Mail Australia reached out for comment, a representative from Channel Nine stated that they would not disclose their schedule of shows for 2025 until the Upfronts presentation takes place.

Osher Günsberg, the host of the Australian Bachelor franchise on Channel 10, announced in May that neither The Bachelor nor The Masked Singer will be airing on our screens in the near future.

As I find myself at the halfway mark of my golden years, I, Osher, have decided to prioritize quality time with my beloved family, following the temporary halt in production for The Masked Singer.

He said to 2DAY FM’s Hughesy, Ed & Erin, “This show is genuinely entertaining, yet just as with everything else, changes are inevitable.”

‘The show’s not coming back because I did a bad job, I can tell you that,’ he joked.

Dave Hughes, a member of the judging team, commented: ‘No, it’s taking a break. It will return, more significant and improved than before.’

Osher also confirmed that production on The Bachelors has been halted.

‘I tell you what, I haven’t cancelled our trip to Fiji, which is in the middle of the shooting window we normally have [for The Bachelors],’ he said.

The news comes just days after a report by TV Tonight revealed producers Warner Bros TV have quietly been ‘gauging interest from rival networks’ for the series.

The cost-effective production of the guess-the-song program, led by Osher, is often perceived as a challenge because of the need for extravagant costumes, top-notch production values, and globally renowned artists involved in staging the event.

In addition to a challenging ad market, it’s been suggested that this situation has cast doubt on the feasibility of the franchise for Ten.

Additionally, neither The Bachelors nor its related versions, all of which are hosted by Günsberg, have set air dates for 2024, even though they were unveiled during the annual Upfronts event.

Upon being reached out to by Daily Mail Australia for a response, a representative from Ten stated, “We are in the process of finalizing our lineup for the remainder of the year, and we will be making those announcements shortly.”
