Tangled Eyes Fan-Favorite Marvel Star for Mother Gothel Role

I’m so excited about the live-action Tangled remake Disney is planning! I’ve heard rumors they’re considering a really popular actress from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to play Mother Gothel, and honestly, I think that’s brilliant casting. She’d be perfect as the villain in Rapunzel’s story!

Kathryn Hahn in talks to play Mother Gothel in live-action Tangled remake

According to Variety, Disney is looking at Emma Stone to play Mother Gothel in the upcoming live-action “Tangled” remake. Teagan Croft is expected to star as Rapunzel, and Milo Manheim will play Flynn Rider. Disney hasn’t officially confirmed any of these castings yet.

I’ve always been fascinated by Mother Gothel from the movie Tangled. She pretends to be Rapunzel’s loving mother, but really, she’s just using Rapunzel’s incredible hair to stay young forever! It’s a brilliant, if twisted, character. And the movie itself was a huge success – I remember hearing it made almost $600 million around the world! Donna Murphy really brought Gothel to life with her voice, too; she was perfect for the role.

Michael Gracey, the director of The Greatest Showman, is set to direct Disney’s upcoming live-action remake. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson penned the screenplay, while Kristin Burr will produce the film through her company, Burr! Productions. Lucy Kitada is an executive producer on the project.

Deadline was the first to report that Scarlett Johansson was considered for the part of Mother Gothel, but she had to drop out because she was already committed to filming The Batman 2 and a reboot of The Exorcist. After that, fans started a campaign online, hoping Sarah Paulson would take the role. Deadline noted that Paulson’s name began gaining traction among fans immediately after Johansson was no longer available.

Disney first announced the live-action Tangled movie in 2024, but put the project on hold when early responses to the concept weren’t very positive. They started working on it again in October 2025 and shared some casting news in January 2026. As of now, Disney hasn’t announced when the movie will actually come out.

Kathryn Hahn has been busy with several new projects! She recently starred in the WandaVision spinoff Agatha All Along and the Apple TV+ series The Studio. She’s also joined Christian Bale and Nicolas Cage in the upcoming biopic Madden, directed by David O. Russell.
