One of the original stars has confirmed their return and shared the reason behind taking on a brand new role in the upcoming sequel.
Honestly, it’s awesome to be back for a sequel, especially when it lets me play a completely new character. I’m super grateful for the chance! This time around, I’m playing Ernesto, and he’s… well, he’s a total departure from anything I’ve done before, really different.
Mora explained that the characters definitely feel different, and the time that passed between the films likely affected the young actor’s performance. He praised co-writer C. Robert Cargill and director Scott Derrickson for crafting a story with real emotional depth. He believes audiences will connect with the characters – like Glenn, Finn, and Mondo Ernesto – and their struggles, especially Ernesto’s grief over the loss of his brother, Robin, which is touched upon in the film. Overall, Mora anticipates a strong emotional connection from viewers.
The 2021 film *The Black Phone* is based on a short story by Joe Hill and features a screenplay co-written by C. Robert Cargill. The movie stars Ethan Hawke as a ruthless child abductor known as the Grabber. When Finney, played by Mason Thames, is kidnapped, he discovers he can communicate with the Grabber’s previous victims through a mysterious black phone.
The movie *The Black Phone* was a big hit, earning over $161 million despite only costing $18 million to make. Because of its success, a sequel, *Black Phone 2*, is already in development, and the original stars – Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames, Madelaine McGraw, and Jeremy Davies – are all returning.
Will the Grabber’s Story Continue After Black Phone 2?
Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill recently talked about the plans for a potential *Black Phone 2*, explaining that it will move beyond simple horror and lean more into the supernatural. When asked about continuing the story after the sequel, now that the villain, ‘The Grabber,’ is established as something beyond a typical serial killer, Cargill questioned if audiences would even want a third film. Derrickson added that they haven’t seriously discussed a third movie yet, but he’s optimistic fans will be interested in seeing more of the series in the future.
Black Phone 2 arrives in theaters on Oct. 17.
