While the series does emphasize themes of love and camaraderie, it’s primarily focused on adventure and the bond between kids and their digital companions. Although various characters have shown signs of affection, these connections have never developed beyond fan-imagined relationships.

Although Digimon Adventure 02‘s finale did include a few canon couples, a much-loved pairing between Sora and Tai was not included. Over the years, fans have fantasized about and even invented stories for this relationship, but in reality, it remained unfulfilled. While some scenes within the anime hinted at a potential romance between these two characters, it ultimately didn’t come to pass.

Before their journey to the Digital World, Sora and Tai were already acquainted, having been classmates in Highton View Terrace and teammates on the soccer team. This long-standing friendship provided a solid foundation for them. In the Digital World, they relied on each other for support. However, due to Tai’s impulsive nature and Sora’s maturity, they sometimes clashed or disagreed when Matt wasn’t involved.

Regardless of their minor squabbles, it was evident that Tai harbored deep affection for Sora and took great care in guarding her well-being. This sort of behavior hinted at something more profound, and fans eagerly speculated about their relationship, dreaming they’d eventually be a couple when the story concluded. To maintain his character as multi-dimensional, it was only fitting to introduce a romantic subplot involving one of the female characters.

In a straightforward manner, it’s evident that Tai didn’t showcase many emotions apart from his affection for Agumon and the world’s salvation. Compared to him, Matt was more emotionally complex. He had a history of family issues, such as his parents’ divorce and strained bond with his brother. The fandom expressed disappointment that the series may have given false hopes, as the storyline never developed beyond Sora marrying Matt instead.

It turns out that contrary to what many fans hoped, the creators of Digimon Adventure 02 had planned for Sora and Matt to be a couple all along. In the epilogue of Digimon Adventure 02, Sora and Matt get married and have children who become part of the next generation of Chosen Children. It’s important to point out that although the Tron movies didn’t delve deeply into their romantic relationship, Digimon Adventure 02 confirmed that Matt and Sora were indeed dating. Sora confessed her feelings for him during a Christmas episode, and they began their relationship shortly after the Digimon attack at Matt’s concert. In essence, while their relationship in the original series was ambiguous, there’s no evidence to suggest that Sora and Tai might have been a couple.
