Tag team wrestling in AEW needs some improvement

As a lifelong wrestling enthusiast who’s seen the highs and lows of tag team divisions over the years, I can’t help but feel a tad nostalgic as I watch All Elite Wrestling (AEW). When they first burst onto the scene in 2019, their emphasis on tag teams was a breath of fresh air. But lately, it seems like we’ve been stuck in a loop with The Young Bucks, FTR, and The Acclaimed.

When All Elite Wrestling (AEW) debuted in 2019, its tag team division was a cornerstone of the company, delighting fans with high-quality matchups between top industry duos. However, over time, this aspect seems to have lost some of its former luster. Currently, The Young Bucks hold the titles, and upcoming feuds may involve The Acclaimed and FTR. Despite this, many fans are voicing their desire for improved storylines in the tag team division.

Are The Young Bucks among the greatest tag teams ever in wrestling? Absolutely. Is FTR reminiscent of classic tag team wrestling that fans adore? Indeed. Are The Acclaimed a popular pair, despite some wanting to separate Anthony Bowens from Max Castor? Yes. However, AEW’s tag team division offers so much more than just these teams. While AEW effectively schedules tag team matches across its three weekly shows, none have received the significant long-term push needed for lasting impact.

For the band duo, Private Party, there was much excitement and anticipation that they would climb up the charts, especially considering their increased exposure on TV. However, instead of ascending, they seem to have experienced more losses than wins. This isn’t the first time that enthusiasm for this duo has been dampened, as it appears the flames of expectation have once again been extinguished.

As a devoted fan, I’ve noticed that powerhouse teams such as The Righteous, The Outrunners, and the dynamic duo Kyle Fletcher and Konosuke Takeshita have been finding it tough to make their mark. With none of these teams gaining traction, it’s no surprise that the booking keeps returning to them. It feels like there aren’t many other viable options left in the scene right now.

Discussing the trio’s separation didn’t lead to significant improvement. Fans eagerly anticipated six-person tag team matches in AEW and their wishes were granted. For a while, that division was buzzing with teams such as The Elite, Death Triangle, and House of Black delivering spectacular weekly matches. However, the rest of the division lacked development, and enthusiasm for potential challengers decreased. Additionally, unconventional booking choices involving Bullet Club Gold didn’t aid the predicament. Despite the titles being held by The Patriarchy, they seem to be in a stalemate, as if they are merely being kept on hold.

Enthusiasts of wrestling are particularly fond of tag team matches, as they played a significant role in propelling many legendary figures within the industry to stardom. All Elite Wrestling showcased these groups admirably during their regular programming, but there has been a shift away from this approach. Now, it’s high time for the company to revert back to traditional methods and focus on tag teams once more.
