T1 credits G2 for Worlds 2024 Finals scrim, ready for a rematch in December
As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the esports scene is more interconnected than many realize. The recent World 2024 Finals was a testament to this unity, as T1’s victory was not only due to their hard work but also thanks to the behind-the-scenes support from rivals like G2 Esports. It’s like watching Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed training together before their big match – a bit strange, yet it ultimately leads to a better fight for the spectators.
In simpler terms, G2 assisted T1 in getting ready for the World 2024 Finals prior to their rematch – a chance for revenge – which was scheduled for December.
T1 emerged as the 2024 World Champion, claiming their fifth World Championship title in a thrilling 3-2 series against top LPL team Bilibili Gaming. Although the win primarily showcases the dedication and effort of the players and coaching staff, T1’s General Manager Jeong “Becker” Hoi-yoon acknowledged that assistance from G2 Esports played an essential role in the achievement as well.
A day following T1’s triumph, Becker shared on his individual X account that G2 Esports and certain unspecified players had aided T1 in practice sessions (scrims) to ready themselves for the Finals. He expressed gratitude towards G2 Esports for their assistance, which garnered congratulations from the LEC team.
Towards the end of September, Becker also extended his thanks to G2 Esports for providing T1 with practice facilities. This probably happened as both teams were gearing up for the 2024 Worlds Swiss Stage in Berlin, the hometown of G2 Esports. Historically, T1 and G2 have been mutual supporters, engaging in scrimmages when they both qualify for international competitions.
Further, it was rumored within the community that T1 selected champions like Nocturne, Ornn, and Kalista in Match 2 as a result of scrimmages against G2, a speculation that was eventually validated by the LEC team’s confirmation.
A T1 vs G2 rematch is set for December
In the Worlds 2024 Swiss Stage Round 4, T1 managed to outperform G2, but an opportunity for a rematch between these two powerhouses is coming up more quickly than anticipated. Since they are both backed by Red Bull, they will face off again at Red Bull’s annual League of Legends event. The event, known as Red Bull League of Its Own, has been scheduled to take place on December 15 at the Accor Arena in Paris, France.
Last year, team T1 engaged in a set of exhibition games versus European squads: BIG, NNO Old, Karmine Corp, Team Heretics, and G2 Esports. In these matches, T1 was victorious against four opponents prior to losing to G2 Esports. This time around, the competition is fiercer than ever as additional teams have entered the fray.
Previously, a unique rule was enforced for the World Champion, preventing them from using any champions they had played before in the Rift, with exceptions only during the Grand Final against G2. As a result, T1’s selection of playable champions was limited in all matches.
It was thrilling to witness Team 1 displaying unconventional choices such as Volibear as their top pick, Cho’Gath on the bottom lane, and Caitlyn as their support in the game. These champions are not often used in the current meta, but fans are eagerly anticipating another exciting show like this at the Red Bull event this year.
