System Shock Remaster Developer Nightdive Studios is Keen to Turn its Hand to Xbox 360 and PS3 Remasters
A studio known for refurbishing and re-creating classic titles such as System Shock, The Thing, DOOM 64, among many others, Nightdive Studios has expressed interest in updating Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 games next.
As a passionate gamer, I’m always eager and prepared for the next big challenge. Larry Kuperman, our Business Development Director, shared with VGC that we must tread carefully before diving into our next project, as there are several factors to take into account.
He mentioned he’d like to ask a few queries,” he said. “Was the game exclusive to Xbox 360 or was it also available on PC? If we have the source code, what’s its quality like? The same goes for the assets. These factors are important when considering preservation. It’s worth noting that there were some fantastic games released during that time that shouldn’t disappear.
Stephen Kick, the Studio Head, pointed out ‘Haze’, a 2008 PS3 exclusive game developed by Free Radical Design, as an illustration. In this scenario, Nightdive Studios would engage with the original designers and inquire about what changes they would implement if given more time and resources.
In essence, if Haze was our game for 2028 (hypothetically speaking), we’d approach the original creators and ask: “Since it didn’t perform as well as expected, I imagine you’ve had plenty of time to reflect on what could have been done differently.” This is how Kick put it.
Moreover, the distinctive design of PS3 might present various challenges for Nightdive to tackle. However, their KEX Engine may potentially be modified to handle these issues. Areas such as “frame rate, screen refresh rate, texture clarity, streaming, and loading times” could see improvements in a Nightdive remaster, as suggested by the studio.
Kick explained, “When we reach the stage of remastering games from the PS3 era, it will be a challenge. However, given our prior experience, I believe we can handle it effectively for a quality remaster.” This expertise should also extend to Xbox 360 remasters, considering its architecture was more standardized.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that after the captivating remaster of System Shock 2 for its 25th anniversary is out, there might be some exciting news about System Shock 3 coming next year. Most recently, Nightdive Studios has given a fresh lease of life to the chilling 1996 point-and-click horror gem, I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream.
