I’m blown away by how quickly Sydney Sweeney’s The Housemaid has become a huge success! It’s already made over $247 million, making it her second-biggest movie so far, right after Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. But before she was playing this intense, live-in role, she was in this fantastic horror movie that really surprised everyone back in 2024. And now, amazingly, it’s found a whole new audience and is doing really well on streaming!
Sydney Sweeney’s horror film, Immaculate, is quickly becoming a hit on HBO Max, currently ranking as the second most popular movie worldwide, just behind One Battle After Another (according to FlixPatrol). Released in theaters on March 22, 2024, the film has earned $35 million globally on a budget of only $9 million, making it a financial success. This is a major accomplishment for the independent film and everyone involved, especially Sweeney, who also produced the movie after securing the rights to the script.
Okay, so I just saw Immaculate and wow! It’s directed by Michael Mohan and written by Andrew Lobel, and stars Sydney Sweeney as Sister Cecilia, a young nun who starts to suspect something’s seriously off at her beautiful Italian convent. Everyone’s calling it one of the best Catholic horror movies in a long time. I even read a review in Variety where William Earl said it had “a surprising amount of horniness”! It’s not explicit at all, but it’s super sensual – there are these scenes with the nuns bathing where their white robes get, well, see-through as they wash each other’s hair. Apparently, the director was totally aiming for that vibe, and some are even calling it a modern “nunsploitation” film. Here’s what the movie is about, according to the official description:
Sydney Sweeney plays Sister Cecilia, a deeply religious American nun who arrives at a beautiful, secluded convent in Italy. What starts as a hopeful new beginning soon turns terrifying when Cecilia discovers the convent hides a dark secret and unimaginable evils.
What’s Next for Sydney Sweeney?

Lionsgate
After the huge popularity of The Housemaid, Sweeney has a quieter schedule planned for 2026. She’ll appear briefly in The Devil Wears Prada 2 and will have a major role in the third season of Euphoria, premiering April 12th on HBO. Beyond that, she doesn’t have many other confirmed projects for film or television this year. However, she’s still working on a lot of things, including a follow-up to The Housemaid.

Lionsgate has approved the production of The Housemaid’s Secret, and filming with Kate Sweeney is planned for this year. The movie, based on the second book in Freida McFadden’s series, is currently expected to be released in 2027. Sweeney will reprise her role as Millie Calloway, who gets caught up in another dangerous situation when she works for the wealthy Garrick family and is falsely accused of murder.
