Sydney Sweeney’s new film, Christy, hasn’t been successful in theaters. Plus-size model Ella Halikas believes this is because the movie didn’t feature Sweeney in revealing enough clothing.
In the film, 28-year-old Sydney takes on the role of boxing legend Christy Martin, a part that’s quite different from the glamorous, blonde characters she’s known for.
When asked if the movie’s disappointing performance was due to the actress not appearing as overtly sexual as in her previous roles, Halikas told TMZ that he believes she’s built a reputation for portraying characters who are confident, attractive, and show a lot of skin, and that audiences expect to see that from her.
The model explained that people seem confused when she isn’t posing in revealing clothing, saying, “They don’t know how to react.”
Halikas explained that the actress has become known for her appearance, so if she takes on a role that doesn’t showcase that, she might lose some of her existing audience.
Before becoming well-known as a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model in 2021, Halikas had already worked with brands like JCPenney and Snapchat.

Sweeney’s latest film, Christy, didn’t perform well over the weekend. Despite being shown in over 2,000 theaters, it only earned $1.3 million, averaging just $649 per theater. According to The Wrap, this puts it among the worst-performing films ever released on so many screens.
Sydney addressed her critics on Instagram Monday, expressing her strong pride in the movie, David’s work, and the story they created.
As a lifestyle expert, I’m incredibly honored to work with someone as powerful and determined as Christy Martin. Representing her has truly been one of the highlights of my career – a real privilege, honestly.
This movie is about overcoming hardship, showing bravery, and finding hope. We’ve worked to bring attention to the issue of domestic violence and the many people it impacts. Everyone involved in the film believed Christy’s story could make a real difference and even save lives.
We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who connected with this story, both now and in the future. If Christy’s journey inspires even one woman to begin her path to safety, we’ll consider our work a success. And yes, we are very proud.
You know, as someone who’s spent years in creative fields, I’ve learned it’s rarely about chasing metrics. It’s about making something that means something, something that truly resonates. And honestly, my work with Christy has been the most fulfilling and impactful project of my entire career. I’m so grateful for the experience and everything she’s taught me. I truly cherish her.
Sydney faced increased criticism this year after it was discovered she was a registered Republican. She also appeared in an American Eagle ad that sparked controversy, with some finding it racially insensitive because of a wordplay connecting ‘jeans’ and ‘genes’.

Both of these controversies appear to be very much at odds with most views in woke Hollywood.
She likely tried to shift attention away from the recent focus on her personal life by releasing her new boxing movie, Christy, but it hasn’t been well-received.
While discussing the film in an interview last Friday, she explained that she became so dedicated to playing Martin that she suffered injuries on set, including a bloody nose and a concussion.
As a lifestyle expert, I’m always fascinated by behind-the-scenes details, and I recently learned something amazing from an Emmy-nominated actress. She shared with me that all the fight scenes in her new movie are completely authentic – no stunt doubles for her and the other women! She’s from Spokane, Washington, and really emphasized how much they all did the fighting themselves. It’s so impressive to see that level of commitment and physicality on screen!
Sweeney explained that when she first met the team, she immediately challenged them, saying, ‘I want honest, critical feedback – don’t hold back! And can I offer my own feedback as well?’
She explained that the training sessions were incredibly physical. It wasn’t just practice; they were genuinely fighting each other, getting hurt with knockdowns, bloody noses, and even concussions.
Every day on set, I was surrounded by a dedicated crew who truly invested themselves in telling this story,” Sweeney shared. “I worked with a group of women who quickly felt like family.
We pushed ourselves to the absolute limit in training, and then found ourselves passionately performing on the competition floor.
Sweeney praised Martin, explaining that he motivated everyone involved in the film to feel confident and embrace their potential.
Sweeney explained that the story inspired them to push for greater rights for themselves and all women who have been made to feel unheard. She described the film as a powerful and moving experience, filled with both pain and joy, and ultimately, incredibly resilient and beautiful.

In March 1996, Christy became nationally known after winning the World Boxing Council women’s lightweight championship in a tough fight against Deirdre Gogarty in Las Vegas. She was also Don King’s first female boxing client.
Loretta Lynn, known as “The Coal Miner’s Daughter,” performed before the highly publicized 1997 boxing match where Mike Tyson famously bit Evander Holyfield’s ear.
She’s also the first and only woman boxer to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine.
She also faced Laila Ali, the daughter of the legendary Muhammad Ali, in a well-publicized fight in 2003, which Laila won by knockout.
