Sydney Sweeney’s latest film, a boxing drama, had a disastrous second weekend in theaters, marking the biggest drop in box office numbers ever recorded. This comes as Sweeney faces public scrutiny over a recent partnership with American Eagle jeans and after several of her projects have underperformed. The film, titled Christy, performed so poorly that its distributor, Black Bear, was hesitant to release the second weekend’s earnings figures.
Recent box office numbers reveal that the film Christy earned only $108,487 over its second weekend, despite being shown in 817 theaters. This represents a massive 92% decrease from its opening weekend, making it the film with the biggest second-weekend drop in box office history. It struggled to attract audiences right from the start.
Directed by David Michôd and co-written with Mirrah Foulkes, Christy is a biographical drama starring Sydney Sweeney as Christy Martin, a professional boxer who gained prominence in the 1990s. The film focuses not only on her boxing career but also on the personal challenges she faced, including difficult family relationships, questions of identity, and an increasingly dangerous romantic relationship. While Christy didn’t perform well in theaters, critics generally liked it (67% on Rotten Tomatoes), and audiences loved it even more, giving it a 96% rating.
Sydney Sweeney Has Responded to the Box Office Failings

After the film Christy’s didn’t perform well at the box office, Sydney Sweeney spoke out, expressing her “deep pride” in the movie.
I’m incredibly proud of this film – of David’s vision, the story we crafted, and the opportunity to portray someone as strong as Christy Martin. It’s been a true honor to be a part of this project. This film embodies survival, courage, and hope, and through our work, we’ve been able to raise awareness about domestic violence. We all believed Christy’s story had the power to help others, and that’s why we made this film.
I’m so grateful to everyone who connected with this story, both now and in the future. If Christy inspired even one woman to begin her journey to safety, then we’ve achieved what we set out to do, and I’m incredibly proud. We create art not just to reach a large audience, but to make a real difference, and this project, centered around Christy, has been the most meaningful of my career. Thank you, Christy. I cherish you.
Christy Martin, the former boxer whose life story inspired the film, has publicly defended Sydney Sweeney. Martin shared on social media, “I’ve always been a fighter, and that’s been true throughout my life. Now, I fight for others.” She explained that she’s seen attacks on Sweeney and wants to make it clear that Sweeney worked incredibly hard, not just on the film, but also to bring Martin’s story – and the stories of many others who suffer in silence – to light. Martin emphasized that Sweeney is a friend and a strong supporter.
