In 2019, Sydney Sweeney, then just 20 years old, filmed the pilot for “Euphoria.” When it debuted on HBO a year later, she was 21. This groundbreaking series about the tumultuous lives and relationships of high school teens quickly drew a global audience. Now, in 2025, after a significant break, Sweeney, along with Zendaya and others, have resumed filming for the third and apparently final season of this show that catapulted her to fame. Although some beloved characters won’t be returning due to scheduling issues and other reasons, viewers can rest assured they’ll continue seeing Sydney Sweeney as Cassie Howard. And according to the actress herself, we’re in for a wild ride as we witness Cassie Howard at her most unstable.
In the initial season of the show, viewers met the endearing and well-liked character, Cassie Howard. Much like any typical teenager, she struggles with managing relationships, but her fear of isolation intensifies these difficulties. Frequently, she experiences emotional breakdowns and finds solace in Nate Jacobs, her best friend’s former partner (portrayed by Jacob Elordi). Their clandestine, intricate relationship unfolds secretly. In the second season, viewers witnessed a more ominous aspect of the character, transforming into someone almost unrecognizable to herself. If you believed this was the peak of her character’s descent, think again, as in an interview with Empire, Sweeney hints that Cassie takes things a step further in Season Three.
In a heartfelt manner, Cassie holds a special place for me – she’s near and dear. Despite her being quite eccentric, prone to errors, and displaying numerous flaws, it’s all stemming from a wellspring of love, even if sometimes tinted with sadness. Playing such an unstable character is exhilarating, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with Sam Levinson, an exceptionally innovative director. Whenever I read a script, I find myself thinking, ‘Let’s take it up a notch,’ and he’s always eager to push the boundaries, making this season absolutely unhinged.
During the interview, she additionally spoke about people who find it hard to distinguish between Sydney and Cassie. She discussed how starring in the series significantly impacted her personal life.
Indeed, it significantly impacted my journey. The widespread exposure and content about Cassie on social media makes it challenging for fans to distinguish between the actress and her role. Given her complex character who elicits both love and hate, this confusion is understandable. However, if viewers are criticizing me for actions taken by my character, then I am effectively portraying her.
From ‘Euphoria’ to ‘Anyone but You,’ ‘The White Lotus,’ and More

Building on the momentum from my breakout role in Euphoria, I’ve been able to forge an exceptional career path. I could have easily allowed the criticism and public scrutiny to steer me off course, but I chose not to, and now my name is everywhere. I don’t confine myself to one genre; instead, you can find me in a wide range of productions, from superhero adventures to psychological thrillers, romantic comedies, horror films, and more. In 2020, I also embarked on a new venture by establishing my own production company, Fifty-Fifty Productions.
