Meanwhile, The Housemaid, already popular on streaming services, has recently reached a significant achievement in digital sales, according to FlixPatrol.

The psychological thriller debuted in cinemas on December 19, 2025, and became available digitally on February 3rd. Since its digital release, The Housemaid has consistently remained among the top 10 most popular titles on platforms such as Amazon and Apple TV for the past 100 days.

The movie is doing incredibly well on digital platforms. While it’s already broken streaming records on Starz, it’s still the top-selling film on Apple TV globally, surpassing even popular titles like Avatar: Fire and Ash and Project Hail Mary. On Amazon’s digital charts worldwide, it’s a close second to Project Hail Mary.

What Happens in The Housemaid?

The psychological thriller The Housemaid is based on Freida McFadden’s popular 2022 novel. Its success is likely due to the book’s existing fanbase, but it’s also attracting many new viewers and readers.

Millie hopes to start fresh by becoming a live-in housekeeper for the wealthy Winchesters, Nina and Andrew. However, her dream job soon turns into a dangerous game of secrets, scandal, and seduction. The Winchesters hide shocking truths behind closed doors, and the story will keep you guessing until the very last moment.

Paul Feig, who directed Bridesmaids, is directing this adaptation, and Rebecca Sonnenshine wrote the screenplay. The film stars Sydney Sweeney, along with Amanda Seyfried, Michele Morrone, Brandon Sklenar, Elizabeth Perkins, and Megan Ferguson.

The Housemaid Is Getting a Sequel

Just weeks after hitting cinemas, Lionsgate quickly confirmed a sequel. However, it doesn’t seem like a hasty attempt to make money, but rather a logical step given the popularity of the original story. Author Freida McFadden has already expanded the book series, with The Housemaid’s Secret released last year. Anya Sweeney and Michele Morrone are both expected to return as Millie Calloway and Enzo Accardi, respectively.

Paul Feig is likely to direct the follow-up film, and he’s working on it as a producer with Todd Lieberman and Laura Fischer. Rebecca Sonnenshine is writing the screenplay. Lionsgate is aiming to begin filming in 2026.
