Sydney Sweeney‘s career has recently taken unexpected paths. From her role in ‘Euphoria’ (streamable with an HBO Max subscription) to starring in a romantic comedy, ‘Anyone But You’, and more recently, her upcoming neo-western movies of 2025, ‘Americana’. The actress known for ‘Madame Web’ is venturing into uncharted territory next. Sweeney will spearhead ‘Eden’, a gritty new thriller by Ron Howard that’s generating buzz not just for its ties to real-life crimes, but also for the innovative creative directions it’s taking both Sweeney and Howard.
In a chat with Screen Rant, Howard, together with actor Jude Law, revealed that the upcoming film, Eden, stands out from the true-life narratives Howard is commonly recognized for. Unlike films like Apollo 13 and A Beautiful Mind, which typically highlight resilience and success, Eden serves as a warning tale. As Howard put it, “Eden presents a different side of storytelling.
This storyline presents a more ominous, edge-of-your-seat experience than usual. It pushes me out of my familiar creative sphere, which is why I sought a script that would appeal to daring performers ready to invest themselves fully, even on a smaller budget. I never envisioned it as a studio production. Instead, I believe we’ve crafted this piece with the intensity and dedication characteristic of such productions.
The former child actor-turned movie director explained why the tale has lingered in his memory for such a long time, labeling it as a gripping true crime mystery that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats right up until the final scene. Unlike many of his earlier works that celebrate victories and triumphs, and although it’s not listed among our upcoming horror films, Eden, with its graphic birthing sequence, is intended to unnerve audiences and leave them pondering over what they have just witnessed. He went on to add:
That story has stuck with me for years ever since I first heard about it, mainly because it’s a captivating true crime thriller filled with unpredictable twists. Moreover, I’ve always wished to see it adapted into a movie, as I imagine it would provide an immersive experience where the suspense builds up throughout, leaving you pondering about it long after watching.
I found myself playing a part in shaping Ron Howard’s choice of actors for his project, as I was drawn to performers who weren’t hesitant to dive headfirst into gritty situations and take bold risks. That’s why Sydney Sweeney came to mind. With her impressive portfolio spanning both glamorous blockbusters and deeply impactful roles, she seemed the ideal fit for a tale that required unapologetic intensity without the cushion of studio finesse. And when you compare her with Jude Law, Vanessa Kirby, and Ana de Armas, it’s evident this cast wasn’t merely gathered but carefully selected to face the task at hand with courage.

After almost half a century in filmmaking, Howard had the opportunity to continue creating uplifting movies based on real-life events he’s excelled at. However, he opted for a different path, delving into more ominous themes, portraying how human nature can become destructive when survival becomes crucial. For Sweeney, this film serves as another bold stride demonstrating her willingness to surpass limits and show that she can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the industry’s veteran actors.
2024 saw the debut of the film “Eden” at TIFF, and in 2025, it’s being shown to broader audiences. Although the reviews have been a mix of positive and negative feedback, our review of “Eden” leans more towards appreciation rather than criticism. For me, what makes this movie captivating isn’t just its gritty true-crime narrative, but how it showcases Sydney Sweeney’s expanding acting abilities and demonstrates that Ron Howard is still willing to take risks.
