Sydney Sweeney Went Full Rocky With Her Christy Martin Prep (And It Sounds Like Serious Business)

If you’re a fan of great boxing movies, you’ve probably heard about the upcoming biopic of Christy Martin, starring Sydney Sweeney. Sweeney has been getting a lot of attention for this role, especially after her dramatic 30-pound physical transformation. She really committed to the part, training like a true fighter to portray Martin. And from what she’s said, the training was incredibly intense.

The trailer for Christy has generated awards season buzz. However, all of Sydney Sweeney’s preparation for the role happened before filming even began. She told Empire she took her preparation to a professional level, starting with a home gym she built inspired by Rocky. She found training there incredibly helpful in getting ready for the part.

I transformed my grandma’s garage into a boxing-style gym, inspired by the movie ‘Rocky.’ I installed a floor-to-ceiling rope, hung punching bags, and even painted the walls with chalkboard paint so I could track my workouts. Training there felt like preparing for a real boxing match.

I’m really looking forward to this new movie coming out in 2025, and I think Sweeney will do a great job playing boxer Christy Martin. But all this interesting detail about how the movie is being made feels like it would be perfect for a behind-the-scenes documentary. It would be fascinating to see the actress, who is 28 years old, train and get in shape in her grandmother’s renovated garage.

Despite everything else, this really shows how committed Sweeney is to her work. It makes me wonder if she even trained like Rocky Balboa, maybe even eating raw eggs!

The Americana actress then detailed her intense preparation for the role, sharing exactly how many hours she trained each day. This dedication is strong evidence of Sydney Sweeney’s commitment to fully immersing herself in the character for this biopic.

I spent three months getting into peak physical condition. Each day included weight training for two hours – one session in the morning and another at night – plus three to four hours dedicated to boxing. I felt incredibly powerful and fit.

Reading about that intense schedule is exhausting just thinking about it! I imagine once you got used to the daily grind, it would become manageable. And all that physical preparation was essential for the actor to safely film the realistic and challenging fight scenes. Creating a dedicated space for so many hours of boxing and weight training definitely makes sense.

More on Christy

An actor who worked with Sydney Sweeney on a film about boxer Christy Martin shared that he was actually hit by her ‘quite a few times’ during training for the role.

The training was only the beginning for the Anyone but You star, as she really got put to the test when filming began. Sydney Sweeney has described the work as both fulfilling and incredibly demanding. She’s previously talked about some tough moments, even needing a lot of ice packs on her face to recover after particularly challenging scenes.

All the hard training was challenging, but it sounds like converting the garage into a gym was key for Sweeney to get in shape for the role. And it definitely seems like her dedication really paid off!

See Sydney Sweeney shine in her new movie, Christy, coming to theaters across the country on November 7th.
