Sydney Sweeney has responded to the criticism surrounding her American Eagle ad campaign, stating the public reaction was overwhelming and beyond her control.
The 27-year-old actress caused a major online backlash earlier this year when a denim company released an advertising campaign. The campaign played on the similar sound of ‘good jeans’ and ‘good genes,’ which many people compared to the harmful and racist ideas of eugenics.
Okay, so this new ad? It totally blew up online, and not in a good way. Everyone’s furious, saying it’s pushing this awful ‘white supremacy’ stuff and that it’s full of these sneaky, coded messages meant to appeal to racist ideas. Honestly, it’s everywhere I look, people are so upset, and I kind of get why. It’s a mess!
You know, it’s been interesting watching the reaction to this whole situation. Sydney really stayed out of the spotlight for a while, which definitely fueled the fire. Finally, she did speak up last week, but honestly, it felt like she was carefully avoiding directly addressing the controversy. She didn’t really take a stand either way – didn’t defend the campaign, and didn’t denounce it either. It was a very calculated move, and left a lot of people wanting more clarity.
In a recent interview with The Guardian about her new movie, Christy, she still didn’t respond to the criticism she’s facing, maintaining that she can’t influence how people interpret her behavior.
When questioned about the criticism she’s received regarding the advertisement and claims about her political views, she simply stated that she has always been true to herself.

I believe the most important thing is staying true to myself. I’m consistently just who I am, but I can’t control how others perceive or label me.
It’s like, I’ll share my thoughts in writing, and then everyone will interpret them differently. I aim to be authentic, but I realize people will always see things through their own experiences and perspectives.
Christy, a new movie about the life of boxing star Christy Martin, came out on Friday. The film tells the story of how she became the top female boxer of the 1990s.
Sydney shared that playing Christy really affected her. She connected with the boxer’s story – as a gay woman fighting in a world run by men, and overcoming difficult experiences with her husband and coach.
After reading Christy’s story, she realized she had a lot in common with her, explaining that she could really understand and relate to what Christy had gone through.
She battles challenges both in and out of the boxing ring, and I face my own struggles similarly, both personally and publicly.
Feeling unseen, navigating difficult connections, and the journey of becoming a woman – all part of finding yourself and creating your own life.
Despite high expectations, the movie wasn’t well-received by critics or audiences, earning just $1.3 million at the box office over the weekend.

Okay, so Christy finally came out, and I was practically glued to the box office numbers! It scored a 67% on Rotten Tomatoes, which, honestly, the critics don’t get it, but whatever! What’s amazing is it played in over 2,000 theaters – 2,011, to be exact – and each one averaged $649! I checked The Wrap to make sure I wasn’t imagining things, but it’s true! It’s a HUGE deal, you guys. A HUGE deal!
The movie’s opening weekend was among the 12 worst ever for films released in over 2,000 theaters, according to Box Office Mojo.
Three films further down the list came out within the first fourteen months of the COVID-19 pandemic, a period when movie theaters suffered significant financial losses due to public health restrictions.
This follows more criticism for Sydney after she didn’t address questions about the backlash to her American Eagle advertisement last week.
She acted as if she wasn’t bothered by the criticism and didn’t want to take a position on the issue, skillfully avoiding any direct questions about it.
In an interview with GQ, Sydney addressed the criticism she received, downplaying her involvement and explaining, ‘I just did an ad for jeans. The strong reaction was unexpected, but I genuinely love them—I wear jeans all the time. Honestly, most days I’m just in jeans and a T-shirt.’
Following questions about Donald Trump’s positive comments about an ad campaign – comments he made after discovering Sydney was a registered Republican – the White Lotus actress described the situation as ‘surreal’.

She maintained she hadn’t noticed the response or been paying attention to it, explaining she was occupied with work and didn’t have her phone readily available.
It felt really strange… I’d experienced something similar before, but I hadn’t really processed it. I wasn’t thinking about any of it at all, I just instinctively put my phone away.
I was filming constantly, including long 16-hour days on the set of Euphoria. I usually leave my phone off set, so I’d work, then go straight home and sleep. Because of that, I didn’t see much of what was happening online or elsewhere.
When asked about accusations that the advertisement promoted the idea of ‘genetic superiority,’ Sydney avoided taking a clear stance, neither supporting nor apologizing for the campaign.
Rather than directly addressing the accusations of white supremacy, she offered a noncommittal reply. She simply said that when she feels strongly about something, she will make her views known.
On Saturday, Sydney posted a series of photos on Instagram showing behind-the-scenes moments from filming Christy. She shared how much the experience meant to her, saying it will always be a cherished memory.
The actor shared that every day on set, they were inspired by the dedication and passion of the entire crew. They described working with the female cast as feeling like being part of a family, fighting for the story together.

Honestly, we pushed ourselves further than I ever imagined possible, and then, standing right there in the ring, we just lost ourselves singing. It was everything. We poured our hearts out, literally, right on that floor. I’ll never forget it.
She also praised Christy, saying she motivated everyone on set to be their best selves.
Sydney explained that the story inspired them to push for better conditions for themselves and all women who have been prevented from speaking out. She described the film as a powerful experience, filled with both pain and joy, and ultimately, incredibly strong and beautiful.
The actress, known for her role in The White Lotus, concluded her statement by expressing gratitude to the film’s director, David Michôd. She thanked him for having faith in her and shared that she ‘will never forget the way it changed’ her.
