The flag, sporting the distinctive colors of a neo-fascist organization, subtly echoes the controversial American Eagle ad. The banner reads, “She embodies the finest shades of blue.” It’s important to clarify that when it says “genes,” not “jeans” is meant. In a 2020 presidential debate, President Trump instructed the Proud Boys, a right-wing group, to “stand down and prepare to stand up” when questioned about denouncing violent extremists on the far-right.

On Monday, American Eagle’s shares experienced a significant increase of over 20%, following President Trump’s public endorsement of Sydney Sweeney’s contentious promotional campaign with the company.
It’s unclear who put up the banner bearing the far-right group’s name, according to ABC7.
On Friday, a spokesperson for Sweeney was yet to provide a response to The Times’ query for a comment.
Recently, American Eagle unveiled a series of ads for their new campaign starring the actor from “Euphoria”. In one of these ads, the Emmy-nominated actress with blonde hair explains, “Genes are inherited from parents to children, typically shaping traits such as hair color, personality, and even eye color. My jeans, however, are blue.
The posters for the American Eagle campaign showcased a unique, original play on words connecting “jeans” and genetics. A catchphrase states, “Sydney Sweeney boasts exceptional ‘denim’ genes,” where the word ‘denim’ is used instead of ‘genes.’

Sydney Sweeney seems to be adopting an either innocent or extremely provocative approach. She’s currently marketing a unique soap, claimed to have been made using the water she supposedly bathed in.
In a less formal way: Sweeney, who seems to have a knack for unusual marketing ventures, soon faced backlash on social media as people claimed the campaign appeared to employ eugenics-like language. Eugenics is an outdated concept that promoted the idea of enhancing the human species through controlled breeding. This ideology became popular in the early 1900s and was misused by Hitler’s Nazi Germany to eliminate millions of Jews, as well as by U.S. officials to sterilize over 60,000 people in California and many more across other states without their consent.
To help ease the anger, American Eagle publicly clarified that their recent campaign solely focuses on promoting their jeans.
The campaign led by Sweeney and the American Eagle gained backing from conservative groups, a trend that was not new for the 27-year-old actress known as “Immaculate.” Shortly after the advertisement was released, documents detailing her recent voter registration showed she registered as a Republican in June 2024. This information caught Trump’s attention, prompting him to share it on his Truth Social account.
Donald Trump recently praised Sydney Sweeney, a Republican, for having a ‘red-hot’ ad for American Eagle. He mentioned that the jeans are selling quickly. His Monday post encouraged everyone to grab them, after earlier misspelling her name as ‘Sidney Sweeney.’

In the midst of all the chaos surrounding fashion trends and online discussions, neither Sweeney nor American Eagle appeared to have much at stake.
Amidst the confusion over fashion and social media debates, it didn’t appear that either Sweeney or American Eagle had anything significant to risk.
Last week’s controversy seemed to be of little concern for Sweeney, as she was seen singing karaoke with a few of her “Euphoria” cast members in Santa Monica. Additionally, she graced the red carpet on Monday to publicize her new movie, “Americana,” directed by Tony Tost.
American Eagle, on the other hand, saw its stock surge this week.
