Sydney Sweeney Knows Anyone But You Got Negative Reviews From Critics. But I Appreciate Her Take

Despite being fully occupied with the 2025 release of “Euphoria,” the seasoned actress found a moment to converse with Empire magazine. In this conversation, she didn’t evade the criticism leveled at “Anyone But You.” Instead, she welcomed it, openly discussing:

The movie, titled “Anyone But You,” managed to capture a significant fanbase. Although it didn’t receive much critical acclaim, it raked in over $200 million worldwide on a production budget of just $25 million. Moreover, it sparked a wave of romantic comedy nostalgia among viewers. For the 27-year-old A-list star, this was precisely the aim. She further explained:

Each critic has unique perspectives, and it’s futile to strive for their approval since you’re focusing on others rather than yourself. Instead, it’s a distinct journey with its own path.

In a different take: She’s not off the mark, as there are instances where certain types of movies receive more acclaim from critics compared to audiences, and vice versa. The film “Reality,” a low-budget yet intense thriller about whistleblower Reality Winner, finds Sweeney delivering an authentic, makeup-free performance that’s been highly praised for its emotional depth. You can watch it with a Max subscription, and it’s definitely worth giving a try. However, if “Reality” was challenging to prepare for, the film “Anyone But You” was a pure joy to work on.

Sweeney appears to view her project selections not as a matter of one or the other, but rather as part of a well-thought-out career approach based on contrast. She stated:

I adore things that starkly contrast with my own personality. In essence, the roles I portray on stage or screen span a wide spectrum, ranging from refined to unhinged, such as the polished or the eccentric ones.

It’s no coincidence that she exhibits such a diverse range of roles: Over the past few years, she has portrayed a Manson girl in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”, a paranoid whistleblower in “Reality”, a nun carrying the Antichrist in the acclaimed horror movie “Immaculate”, and even a young Spider-Woman in “Madame Web”. Despite mixed reviews for some of her projects, they have all served as significant stepping stones in her acting career.

There’s been talk about the possibility of a sequel to the hit movie “Anyone but You“. When Sydney Sweeney was recently interviewed by Empire, she didn’t give a definite answer one way or another.
