Sydney Sweeney is no fan of Hollywood girlbosses who ‘fake’ support for other women
As a seasoned movie critic with decades of industry experience, I must say that Sydney Sweeney‘s journey is both inspiring and disheartening in equal measure. Her talent, dedication, and resilience are undeniable, but it’s unfortunate to see her grappling with the harsh realities of Hollywood’s supposed ‘female empowerment.’
Since her breakthrough performance in HBO’s “Euphoria,” Sydney Sweeney has been demonstrating that there is far more depth and talent to her than just her physical appearance.
In recent years, the actor from “White Lotus” has expanded her talents to demonstrate her acting abilities and proved herself as a producer with films such as “Immaculate” and “Anyone but You.” However, despite these efforts, this 27-year-old star expresses that the apparent backing for female artists in Hollywood, especially from established women, seems more like empty promises.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, published on Wednesday, she stated that the entire industry is often portrayed as ‘Women empowering other women’, but in reality, this empowerment isn’t occurring. Instead, she believes it’s all a facade and a cover for the negative things said about others when they’re not around.
Months following Carol Baum’s dismissal of her star power as a producer of “Father of the Bride,” Sweeney (founder of Fifty-Fifty Films) spoke up against what he perceived as false feminism in Tinseltown.
At an April screening of her 1988 film “Dead Ringers” in New York, Baum casually commented, “[Sweeney] isn’t conventionally attractive, and her acting skills are questionable. Yet, she’s undeniably captivating.” Sweeney’s team promptly retorted, expressing disappointment that a woman with the platform to offer insights and wisdom would instead criticize another woman.
A representative for Sweeney stated to The Times in April that if Baum’s beliefs, derived from her long-term industry experience and considered suitable for teaching her students, are indeed what she believes, it is unfortunate. It suggests a lack of respect or fairness towards another female producer, reflecting negatively on Baum’s character.
Baum reportedly felt regret over her remarks, but the sting has clearly remained for Sweeney.
As a film enthusiast, it’s truly saddening to witness fellow women undermining each other, particularly when accomplished women in the same industry overlook the tireless efforts of emerging talents. This was my sentiment expressed during an interview for Vanity Fair’s 2025 Hollywood edition.
I’ve come to realize that in Hollywood, competition among women might seem like a built-in aspect rather than a flaw. While it could be seen as a generational issue, the belief that only one woman can achieve success – whether it’s winning a man’s heart or climbing the career ladder – has been deeply ingrained in us. It feels like there’s room for just one woman to shine, to excel, to be anything at all.
In a conversation with the magazine, Sweeney, without directly mentioning Baum, expressed that she’s striving hard to establish her own reputation. However, she posed the question, “Why am I facing such criticism?
Prior to the infamous Baum incident, this two-time Emmy nominee had been open about her path to Hollywood. In an interview with The Times back in 2022, she admitted that it hadn’t been a smooth ride. For quite some time, she stated, she was simply struggling, struggling, struggling to secure roles. As a teenager starting out in acting, she faced not only the stress of growing up but also the pressures from the industry.
As a teenager of 16, struggling with self-acceptance and grappling with the bewildering changes happening within me – my body, appearance, and emotions – it felt like an overwhelming burden when others told me I wasn’t good enough. The weight of those words was unbearable.
Despite potentially feeling under-backed by fellow women in the Hollywood industry, Sweeney finds solid support from her parents who have consistently had faith in her abilities. (The Times was the source of this statement.)
