Sydney Sweeney has been targeted by Ruby Rose in a blistering takedown.
Danielle Brooks, known for her role in Orange Is The New Black, publicly criticized Zendaya on Monday via Threads. Brooks disapproved of Zendaya’s part in the upcoming film Christy, which tells the story of boxer Christy Martin, who was also a survivor of domestic violence.
Okay, let’s talk about this movie everyone’s been buzzing about. Honestly, the opening weekend was…disappointing, to say the least. It had one of the lowest numbers for a widely released film in a long time, and it really sparked a lot of conversation, culminating in Ruby’s very public and passionate reaction. It’s definitely a moment, and people are trying to understand what happened.
During a recent online discussion, she criticized Sydney, stating she was initially supposed to play the character ‘Cherry’ and that the original cast was almost entirely LGBTQ+. She then accused Sydney of being homophobic.
She said the first version of the Christy Martin script was amazing and deeply impactful. She was set to play the character Cherry, and many involved with the project personally connected with the story – a lot of the cast and crew were actually members of the LGBTQ+ community. She felt this connection was a major reason she continued pursuing acting, understanding that losing out on roles is simply part of the business.

Her public statement about the film’s failure, claiming it was done to appeal to fans, is insulting. Fans don’t want to support someone who clearly dislikes them and pretends to be one of us. She’s completely misguided and has destroyed the movie. Christy, the actress, deserved a much better outcome.
Even though she previously said Christy deserved more respect, the boxer – a 1990s star with an impressive 49 wins – is now supporting Sydney and has been actively helping with her publicity efforts.
Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Sydney and Ruby for comment.
Christy chronicles the inspiring journey of a boxer who became a household name in the 1990s, as well as the difficult challenges she faced, including a 2010 attempted murder by her husband and coach, and her personal exploration of her sexuality.
Following her escape from an abusive husband – who received a 25-year prison sentence for attempted murder – she married Lisa Holewyne in 2017. She then dedicated herself to supporting others who have experienced domestic violence.

Ruby was especially upset that a straight actress was cast in a role meant for a queer character, and this led to her strong reaction and comment about ‘hatred’.
Sydney shared that portraying the athlete gave her a newfound sense of strength and confidence. She felt empowered and almost unstoppable while embodying the sportswoman, learning to be assertive and believe in herself.
Christy possesses incredible inner strength, which has been evident throughout her life, and I truly felt that while filming with her.
This experience has definitely affected my personal life, but I’ve always had a strong sense of self. Thankfully, I’ve been surrounded by incredibly supportive friends and family, and I learned a great deal from Christy.

Just hours before Ruby publicly reacted, Sydney responded to the disappointing box office performance of Christy’s film. On Monday, the actress posted a heartfelt message on Instagram.
The movie Christy earned just $1.3 million over the weekend, despite being shown in over 2,000 theaters. This resulted in an average of only $649 per theater, making it one of the lowest-performing films ever released on so many screens, ranking among the worst four, according to The Wrap.
She faced intense media scrutiny because of her political opinions, went through a difficult breakup after seven years together, and seemed to be excluded by other celebrities at high-profile events.
Sydney addressed her critics on Monday, expressing immense pride in the movie, David’s work, and the story they created together.
I’m incredibly proud to be a supporter of Christy Martin, a truly strong and resilient person. Honestly, having the chance to stand with her has been one of the biggest honors of my life. It’s something I’ll always cherish.
This movie is about fighting for survival, showing bravery, and finding hope. We’ve worked to increase understanding of the impact of domestic violence through our outreach efforts. Everyone involved in the film believed Christy’s story could truly make a difference and even save lives.

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who connected with this story, both now and in the future. If Christy’s journey inspires even one woman to find the courage to seek safety, we’ll consider our work a success. And yes, we are very proud.
It’s not about popularity; we create art to make a difference. And the Christy project has been the most meaningful work of my life. Thank you, Christy. I cherish you.
Sydney faced significant criticism this year after it was discovered she was a registered Republican. She also appeared in an American Eagle jeans commercial that sparked controversy, with some viewers finding a wordplay connecting ‘jeans’ and ‘genes’ to be racially insensitive.
