Sydney Sweeney spoke out in support of her movie, Christy, after it wasn’t nominated for any awards at the 2026 Golden Globes.
The 28-year-old actress portrays boxer Christy Martin in the new film about her life. While critics liked her acting, the movie wasn’t successful with audiences.
Sydney has spoken out in support of the film about Christy, a famous female boxer in the 1990s, and the story of how her husband tried to kill her.
On Tuesday, Sydney posted the December cover of Sports Illustrated on Instagram. The cover shows Sydney and Christy posing together.
In a passionate post, she wrote: ‘This is the most important film I’ve ever made.
Christy Martin was a powerful and celebrated boxer for two decades. However, behind closed doors, she endured horrific abuse and a near-fatal attack at the hands of her partner.

This isn’t just a boxing story; it’s a powerful tale of finding yourself, overcoming hardship, and the incredible resilience needed to rebuild your life after losing everything.
Every minute in the U.S., roughly 20 people experience physical abuse from a partner.
‘And that’s why this story matters. So like Christy herself, we’re not going anywhere.
‘We’re here to tell the truth. We’re here to stand with survivors.
If this movie helps just one person feel understood, recognized, or less isolated, then we’ll have achieved something truly meaningful.
Thanks for watching and for sharing this with others. I hope you continue to think about Christy even after the movie ends – she certainly has stayed with me.
The film was made on a budget of $15million but has so far made only $2million, a significant loss.
The film made $1.3 million in the US and Canada during its opening weekend, which was among the 12 lowest box office results for a new movie debuting in over 2,000 theaters.

Christy Martin has come to Sydney’s defense, responding to criticism that she was responsible for the movie’s poor box office performance.
The 57-year-old boxing legend shared on Instagram that she’s always been a determined person, both in her life and career, and now dedicates her energy to helping others.
I’ve been really upset seeing people attack my friend, Sydney Sweeney. She put in an incredible amount of work on this film, not just for the movie itself, but also to help bring my story – and the stories of many others who are struggling privately – to life. I want everyone to know what a supportive friend and ally she is.
Laila Ali, with a remarkable record of 49 wins, 7 losses, and 3 draws – including 31 knockouts – gained national recognition when she graced the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1996, where she was hailed as ‘The Lady Is a Champ’.
I still can’t believe it, even after all these years! Her ex, James V. Martin, is still locked up – 25 years at Graceville Correctional! He attacked her back in 2010, stabbed and shot her, but thankfully, she’s a fighter and she survived. It’s just… awful thinking about what she went through, and he’s paying for it, but it doesn’t erase anything. I just admire her strength so much.
Among those who criticised Sydney was former Orange Is The New Black acress Ruby Rose.
The Australian actress disapproved of the actor chosen for the role, stating that she and many other lesbians were boycotting the film as a form of protest against his political views as a registered Republican.
The first version of the Christy Martin script was amazing and really resonated with me. I was set to play the character Cherry in ‘Threads,’ but it seems that part was ultimately removed from the project.
Most people involved already understood the basics. A lot of us were also gay, and that sense of community was a big reason I continued with acting. It’s normal to lose out on roles, but it felt strange when her publicist focused on the project’s failure and claimed Sydney Sweeney did it to connect with fans.

Nobody wants to watch someone they dislike act like they’re one of us. You’re awful, and you completely ruined the movie. Christy deserved a much better experience.
Sydney has not responded to Ruby’s comments.
She’s producing and starring in a new movie called The Housemaid, playing Millie Calloway, a woman recently released from prison. The film will be in US theaters on December 19th.
The film version of Freida McFadden’s 2022 book, directed by Paul Feig, stars Amanda Seyfried, Elizabeth Perkins, Brandon Sklenar, and Michele Morrone.
Sydney Sweeney, known for her role in Euphoria, recently addressed the controversy surrounding her American Eagle ad. The ad’s tagline, ‘Sydney Sweeney has Great Jeans,’ drew criticism from some who interpreted it as a pun on ‘genes,’ implying a suggestion of genetic superiority.
Sydney told People magazine she was genuinely surprised by how people reacted. She explained she simply wore the jeans because she loves both the item and the brand.
I disagree with the opinions of certain individuals who became involved with the campaign. I’ve been unfairly labeled and had false motives attributed to me.
