Comedian Matt Rife, who had his own performance cancelled recently, has come to the defense of actress Sydney Sweeney, after she faced backlash from fans due to her involvement in a divisive American Eagle denim advertisement.

29-year-old comedian, who has recently been involved in controversy following his appearance in an advertisement for E.l.f. Cosmetics, took to X on Friday to respond to the Euphoria actress, addressing criticism surrounding ads promoting soap produced using her personal bathwater.

Matt’s tweet came in the wake of Sydney’s latest movie, Americana, bombing at the box office. 

‘I keep seeing people mad at Sydney Sweeney for noooothing,’ he wrote. 

She’s discovering that the internet is overflowing with individuals who can distort any statement, often in an unproductive and misleading manner. Unfortunately, it sometimes seems that people can be quite unpleasant.

She noted that the makeup of her body is influenced by her genes, and then with a playful remark, “Eyes on me, please,” she directed attention towards her face. The camera promptly moved back up to capture her facial expressions.

In simpler terms, some social media users strongly criticized the campaign, calling it a form of propaganda reminiscent of Nazi ideology. On the other hand, other supporters labeled the critical response as overly extreme or irrational.

In easier, more conversational language, the statement could be rephrased as follows: Later on, Sydney was supported when American Eagle, the apparel company, issued a statement in response to the criticism they faced.

This past week, the actress countered accusations suggesting she’s profiting off a hyper-sexualized persona.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Sydney stated, ‘It’s crucial to stay attuned to public opinion, as everything we do should feel like a dialogue with our audience.’

One of her latest business ventures involves teaming up with Dr. Squatch. In this partnership, she launched a restricted collection of soaps, rumored to contain water from her personal baths.

In response to the backlash, the actress remarked that it was primarily the girls who were commenting on it, finding it intriguing. They seemed to be quite fond of the concept of Jacob Elordi’s bath water.

Sydney was subsequently asked if she approaches sultry or provocative campaigns with strategic thinking, and she affirmed, “Absolutely, yes.

Despite facing criticism from her recent American Eagle ad campaigns, the striking blonde did not respond to the negative feedback.

Not long after the denim campaign dropped, Sydney’s political party was revealed.

The acclaimed actress is reportedly a registered member of the Florida Republican Party, as per the voter records examined by Daily Mail. In June of 2024, she officially registered to vote in Monroe County, Florida.

The film was released in theaters on August 15 – but has bombed at the box office.

The goal of this initiative was to highlight the issue of beauty inequality in a humorous way. However, it seems we may have fallen short for some individuals who are important to us within our e.l.f. (eyes, lips, face) community.

After wrapping up, the company stated, ‘Although el.fino & Schmarnes is shutting down today, we will persist in arguing against excessive pricing in the beauty industry.’
